Just was diagnosed with an anorectal fistula tract and abscess. The physician I consulted in urgent care is ordering a transrectal ultrasound. Theres not much scientific literature showing that it's an effective form of imagery to effectively show a fistula...It's apparently a technical procedure that involves inserting a probe into the rectum. Could inserting a probe into - a shorten - rectum possibly cause damage to the J-Pouch? What imagery is best to show an anal fistula?

Might I suggest an MRI is the best diagnostic tool for abscesses/fistulae. The only person I would allow to place an ultrasound probe into my rectum would be my very experienced colorectal surgeon. An ultrasound technologist would have very limited experience with this and the chances of disrupting the pouch may be VERY high.
