I am currently having adrenal issues and am on Dr. Larry Wilson's adrenal protocol, which calls for doing coffee enemas for detox.  Supposedly it helps to detox the liver.  I was concerned about this protocol because I have a J-Pouch and wasn't sure if this protocol would be physically prohibitive for some reason.  Although I wasn't able to speak with my surgeon who did my surgery in 1993, my general surgeon said that he couldn't think of any reason physically why I couldn't do it, although he knows nothing about coffee enemas and their effectiveness.

So, my question's are....does anyone have any experience doing coffee enemas?  If so, are they effective?  Can they harm the pouch? Is there any reason I shouldn't try it?  I have been very fortunate since my initial surgery and haven't had any issues with my J-Pouch in 27 years.  Don't want to start now! Any input would be appreciated.

Please be *extremely* careful with this. The capacity of a J-pouch is much less than a colon. Putting too much volume in there is likely to injure you, whereas the coffee is merely pointless.

I agree with you Scott about capacity.  Not sure why you think the coffee part is pointless since there is a lot of info out there about the benefits.  I'm just not sure if there are any benefits without a colon and whether it is just as effective at detoxing the liver.

There are certainly plenty of people advocating coffee enemas, but very little of that rises to the level of “information” by my standards. Coffee enemas have been reported to cause proctocolitis, which could cause you a problem. Whenever someone is making claims about “detoxifying” anything, I think it’s best to find out exactly what toxins are of concern. If they can’t name the toxin then they are almost certainly spouting nonsense, and if they can name the toxin there’s still a significant risk that they are spouting nonsense.

Scott you are right on with that.  J pouchers don't really have to worry about anything hanging about too long in the colon, as we don't have a colon.  And our turnover is extremely rapid.

I don't want to put anything uncessary into my body, and especially not up my poor sore butt.

I would recommend  caution with cleanses, supplements, herbal extracts.   They are not benign.  Same goes for OTC medications, and prescription medications.
