Hi all,

I'm about to embark on a difficult journey of having my J pouch removed and converted. It is a big surgery, lots of recovery time and not being able to meaningfully be with my toddler, to work or be independent for a while--lots of laying around with diverse emotions to manage as we all know. Does anyone have any suggestions for inspirational books/reading material the got you through a tough health-period? I'd prefer something without connection to religious themes. I journal as well, as I've always found that helpful.

Thanks so much.

Hi, Duck.  A few book suggestions for easy reading that you can dip into, make a cup of tea, and come back to it. Different authors, they are also written in diarist-style, very gentle, takes you out of yourself to other cities and travels, New York, London, English pubs, tea rooms, small villages, historical homes and gardens, sailing on the Queen Mary, or a year living in the English countryside and all that comes with that.

A Fine Romance (not related to the tv series) by Susan Branch. This book is hand-lettered so it looks like a diary. Plenty of photos. Sailing on the Queen Mary, and  two months travelling through England. A cheerful, happy book.

Letters From New York by Helene Hanff. A short, witty book compiled from her radio series, you can finish this in two days! She was the author of 84 Charing Cross Road, and many other short, easy read, funny books. She also wrote The Duchess of Bloomsbury.

The Magic Apple Tree: A Country Year by Susan Hill. This is a comforting, warm book about one year and the changing seasons living in an English village farmhouse. Images and a few recipes for old fashioned comfort food. I read this years ago and remembered it so well that I searched for it and found two good used copies, one for me just to have it and re-read once in a while, and one to donate to the local library in town. I hope you have a speedy and uncomplicated recovery.
