Is it safe to take ibuprofen for short term relief of non-GI inflammation? I have not touched it since my j-pouch surgery and takedown several years ago, but I am dealing now with rotator cuff pain that responds not at all to acetaminophen. I am seeing an orthopedic doc who is very knowledgeable about the shoulder, less so—understandably—about j-pouches.

I think that it depends on your body and your underlying condition...I have been on NSAIDS for going on 20+yrs...I take a baseline dose 2xs daily for chronic pain (they put me on Tramadol for 6monts instead but I hated the feeling and side effects) and it does the trick...I get my liver and kidney functions checked bi-annually as well...I would definitely check with your doctor but I know of many on this site that do take it on the occasion but avoid long-term use.
