Dear All

I'm new to the group so HI everyone.
I had my pouch formed in 2003 and have generally been very lucky since. I have been able to lead a full and active life.
Earlier this year I cut out meat from my diet. I eat fish.
As the year has progressed I have had persistent and worsening pouchitis. Day times are not so bad but I am up 3-5 times every night and usually have leakage. Output is almost always very watery.
The medics have been very responsive and say it's pretty unusual to have so many good years and then deterioration. I'm probably going to have to go onto biological drugs. I've tried cipro and although I responded fairly well, I felt awful after 2 weeks and my joints were painful. The condition worsened as soon as I stopped taking it.

Any advice? Did change of diet contribute?

The only well-documented effect of diet on pouchitis is that for some people carbohydrates (starches and sugars) may increase the frequency of pouchitis. Bacterial probiotics can also influence (decrease) the incidence of pouchitis, but most people get the necessary doses of those from supplements rather than diet.

Have you tried Flagyl?

I don't think diet, yours anyway contributed, unless you had not been eating fish before? Then you don't have as good a reference point as the fish could be an issue. I however have more issues with veggies and no issues with meat for diet and pouchitis. I have always been put on flagyl and Cipro together and gotten good results. I also take visbiome packets of probiotics and that usually keeps pouchitis away. If I feel like I am starting to get pouchitis, or I'm just feeling off in my gut I take a second dose for a couple days and I can not need the antibiotics.

Good luck

P
