6 MP for staying in Remission?

Since my J-Pouch surgery 14 years ago, there have been very few times when I didn't have inflammation and I have tried most everything.
Now my question: How much success have some of you had with 6 MP? (Mercatopurine I think) The reason I ask is this: My wife encountered her old friend yesterday and he told her that not only had that drug saved him from having his Colon removed, he had taken it ever since and he has never had any more trouble. Since I am now nearly desperate for some relief and never had that drug recommended to me, I am asking for advise or anyones experience with that drug.
Is it really possible to take that drug for years without any ill effects?
