hey guys. I have a question for you. I just had step 1 of the 2 step j-pouch surgery. So I currently have a j-pouch but it’s not hooked up yet. Anyways, my surgery was 11 days ago. I’m home from the hospital and doing pretty good except for one thing...my rectum is so sore. I cannot sit directly on my butt or it hurts badly. I have to keep laying on my side or trying to sit on my hip because my butt hurts. It’s not my tailbone. It’s actual pain somewhere inside my rectum. Did anyone else have that? Remember, the jpouch isn’t functioning yet so that’s why I’m confused.

thank you!!

I can't speak for your specific scenario of course, but your jpouch probally is connected, it's just not in use.  In the UK at least they usually connect you all up, the pull the higher digestive tract out through your belly, snip a hole and call it an ostomy.   The bit after the ostomy is then sewn shut to give the pouch time to heal without use.

My doc told me time and time again I wasn't connected, but 100 percent i was because when I drank beetroot juice or something I got some coloured discharge.

So to point 2, even though your pouch isn't connected, and even assuming it's sealed below the ostomy 100 percent, the lining of the pouch is healing living tissue! As it regenerates the dead cells fall out and have to go somewhere so you get discharge.  As your inflamed in there, you probally have some stuff that needs to come out but won't come out easy.   In hospital I (and am sure others) had a rectal drain sewn in for place for this reason.  This proper hurt for me..

Point 3, you don't say how long you are out of surgery for, but I couldn't sit up for 3 weeks.. I would either walk (hunched) or lie in bed with a slight incline... Anything else was too painful

Try bathing your butt with warm water and see what happens.. it would help the sphincter relax and make it easier to pass discharge.

If that doesn't help, and if the pain is significant and persistent is worth mentioning to a doc

Thanks for your reply! All good info. Yea the connection thing is confusing lol. I know the jpouch is connected to the rectal cuff, the stool is just bypassed out the ileostomy right now. I do get a little stool/mucus passing through my jpouch. Which is normal. I was just making sure it was normal for it to be so sore in there, especially when I’m sitting. Idk, I’m just paranoid that somethings wrong and it’s not healing right? I’m sure the discomfort is probably normal tho. If it gets worse I’ll definitely let my doctor know!

I had pain when I sat on a hard chair for quite a while, but it slowly vanished.  You've had a lot done inside!  It hurt most when I was changing positions, down or up.

Thanks for your reply! Yea exactly! When I’m sitting in a hard chair or even my bed for more than a few minutes, my butt hurts so bad on the inside and I’m forced to stand up or try to sit on my hip.the confusing thing is, I didn’t have this pain in the hospital...just since I got home!

Yes, but in the hospital you had painkillers, spent a lot of time in bed, and were not moving around much.   I didn't notice until I got home and tried to sit at the table.

That is true! Although I only took dilauded until the 2 day post op! And then it was just Tylenol after that. But yes, I mostly laid around in the hospital bed. I sat up here and there but not too much. I wonder if they put lidocaine in there dying surgery and that is wearing off?
