Hi all!

To make a long story short, I went on a Disney Cruise to the Bahamas and came home sick with what was first thought to be bronchitis turned into pneumonia. I have been sick for 3 weeks. I am now in the hospital and the doctors are thinking this is a manifestation of my Crohns. Has anyone ever had lung issues as a result of their UC or Crohns? My J pouch is currently diverted with a temp ileo due to fistulas/peri-anal issues. I had plans for j pouch removal/permanent ileo but I have to postpone surgery b/c this lung issue. I tried the internet  but it doesn’t look like this is a common occurrence. Thanks!!

Yes, absolutely.

No trip to the Bahamas for me. I woke up in the middle of the night coughing and was having trouble just catching my breath. An inhaler helped a little but not much; Dextromethorphan couldn't touch it either. That was about three years ago and since then I have been to about 12 physicians and had about 6 different diagnoses but none are really sure what was going on. The coughing persisted for about two years and then last summer, it calmed down. I still cough but it's a lot less frequent.

Most of the physicians I saw seemed to acknowledge that there is a connection between with IBD patients and issues with the lungs but not to the point where they had any relevant solutions. I did find something on the internet that suggested that people with Crohn's might have disturbances in the airways that are similar to the disturbances in the digestive tract. Well, OK, that's an interesting idea but how does that help?

That is horrible! Glad to know I am not the only one with lung stuff going on. First they said viral cause, then Crohns related, and now we are back to viral. They did a scope of lungs and took samples to culture the possibility of all kinds of crazy things. My biggest problem right now is I still have a low temp ~99.9. I fell uggghh when my temp goes up, get Tylenol, and then I feel better. But something has to be happening to be causing these temp increases. I am sorry you had to see so many people! Did they ever give you steroids? I have a major love/hate probably more hate with steroids as I assume most people do! These immune things are usually a big puzzle. I just want to feel better but it looks like I am going to have to be patient. Thanks for your response!

Interesting... I have had 2 pulmonary embolisms.. but, I was on prednisone both times.  Last year, I had viral bronchitis (caught it from my roommate) that turned into congestive heart failure.  Once they inserted a swan catheter to drain the fluid... I have been feeling great!.

Of course... once again, I now have nasal congestion and a cough (caught it from my co-worker).
