For those who have had a vaginal delivery with their j pouch, who has had an epidural? I am being induced Friday (they want to make sure the entire medical team is there for my delivery). They have been strongly advocating that I have an epidural to reduce stress on my body and to control pushing (with the idea that they don't want me to push they want the baby to "slide out" slowly. I'm easy, I want to do what is best for my baby and protect my pouch. My concern is with an epidural (that I may have for hours on end) will I lose control of my bowels or will they shut down? I will he cathterized for my bladder. I understand that during pushing I won't have control over my bowels but I'm thinking about the hours before. Anyone have any experience /thoughts? I'm mainly worried about skin breakdown/ infection from incontinence.

Hi there! That's so exciting that you're so close to meeting your baby! I had an induction that lasted about 48 hours from start to finish. I got an epidural after the first 24 hours, so I had one in for almost an entire day. I didn't have any issues with bowel control while I was in labor... I guess they kind of shut down, and I wasn't really eating much at that point anyway (drinking lots of gatorade and snacking as I felt up to it). I'm sure if you did leak, though, they would clean you up so you wouldn't have any skin problems, since that's what they do during the pushing stage.

Good luck on Friday!!
