Hello to all   I have another problem and I am hoping that someone can help me as you always do.  After my surgery my surgeon put me on adavan 1mg.   I Have been on it for 7 years. I wanted to wean myself off directed by my primary care Dr. due to the fact that my Ins. co.  does not cover adavan as of 2017.  He put me on zolpidem tartrate 5mg. to start,  did nothing so the Dr. told me to take 10mg.  I only sleep for 3 to 4 hours a night.  Dr. told me to go back on Adavan.   I wanted to try and get off these drugs but I guess it is impossible.  I do take  one lomotil in the morning and antibiotics as needed.  Should I just go back on Adavan?    Does anyone have suggestions for me    I also tried over the counter drugs did not do anything.   HELP

I suggest that you have your doctor submit an appeal to your insurance company that states Adavan is the only medication that allows you the sleep necessary to maintain your health and list the other medications you have tried that have not worked.  A 7 year history of success with Adavan is significant here.

No it is not pain that wakes me.  I just can not sleep for more than 3 to 4 hours.  I do struggle with pain.  I have changed my diet to have less pain.    I haven't been able to gain my weight back which is a struggle.  I can not eat any  raw vegetables,  they have to be cooked.  I do not eat any gassy vegetable, beef, and anything that is high in fat.   I try not to eat anything after 8 pm.   You have to try to figure out what is good for you.  I know I am hard on myself but I try to help myself with managing my pain.  Maybe I am just used to it.  I took me a long time to figure what agrees with me and what doesn't.  Some times I put my food in a good blender and make a chunky soup to get my nutrition.  Now I am also struggling with insomnia.  Everyone here has been so helpful to me.  People that have normal plumbing do not understand what we go thru.  This forum is part of my family.  I have  come along way because of this forum.  I can always rely on them for an answer.  I can't believe that you can not get antibiotics.  What do you do when you get a case of pouchitis?  Is the k-pouch similar to a j-pouch?  I wish you good health and thank you for answering.  I hope that I was able to help you.

Sounds like you are doing just about everything right..But your body is talking to you and it is telling you that it needs something else...

Some people find that eating a tablespoonful of peanut or other nut butters just before bedtime helps them.

I often have a midnight snack...I seem to need it to be able to sleep at night but I have to be careful what I eat and how much...Ice cream and cakes or carbs are a bad idea...They cause gas and wake me up at night...But a piece of chocolate or nuts or nut butters (high concentration foods) ...it seems to even out my glucose level and gives me deeper sleep.

I avoid carbs for dinner too...proteins are my dinner companions along with a green veggie..they like me...

Try different tricks...play with it...exercise helps too...I sleep better when I work out in the mornings...At night I just don't have the time but a long walk, stair climbing or any intense physical activity and I sleep deeper and happier.

Just some thoughts...by the way melatonin works well too.

Thank you Sharon  and Patricia for advice.  Sharon I hope you are feeling better.  I know that you have been thru  rough roads.    As for the advice  I will try the peanut butter,  I also exercise,   I have nervous energy    When my Insurance stopped covering Adivan 1 mg. It actually took me over 2 months to wean myself off under my Dr. care. I had a hard time sleeping as I was cutting down on the drug. The last week of taking Adavin  .25mg I was also taking 10mg Melatonim and Magnesium.  I was sleeping 3-4 hours.  After the 2 months my Dr.  put me on Ambium (generic) 5mg did nothing so he told me to take 10  and now I am again only sleeping 3 to 4 hours.  The Ambium is making me very depressed.  So maybe I should go back on the adivan.  I haven't had a descent nights sleep since I came off the Adivan.  I know that they are not a good drugs but I don't know what else to do.   I appreciate your advice.  I know that I will figure it out with the advice of everyone here.  You all got me to where I am today.  I value every ones opinion.

Hi Grace,

I also rarely get an uninterrupted sleep.  I will go to bed at around 10:30, up at around 12:30-1:00 to pee, then again around 4:30-5:30,  try to go back to sleep but then have to get up for our old dog, because he might have an accident. When I'm not working I might doze again until 8:00.  Not fun.  I typically don't eat after dinner.  Maybe I should try a small snack.

I never "sleep through the night".  I wake some nights every two hours and some 3-4.  I am able to get right back to sleep though.  If you are talking about Ativan, it is for anxiety and yes, can help you sleep but it is addictive which is why you are having problems being off it.  A better option is lomotil.  It helps slow the bowel and has a mild narcotic/sleep effect.  It is also non addicting.  Maybe try that.  Best of luck.
