Help! My husband just got diagnosed with c diff. He was having some bleeding last week, went to the doctor and they sent him to the ER on Friday. He was admitted, didn't get better, then finally they did a scope on Monday and found that the staples were irritated and rubbing, causing the bleeding. They cauterized the wound, but then he felt super sick afterwards and had a fever. They finally took a stool sample today and diagnosed him with c diff. He hasn't been on antibiotics recently so we're not sure if he got it during the scope or if he had it before then from some other source.

Regardless, I have two questions:

1. He had a THR in 2012. I know there is increased risk of the hip failing with an infection. Has anyone with a THR dealt with c diff? What was your experience, and did you have any trouble with the hip failing?

2. I've read that a specific strain of probiotic - saccaromyces boulardii (pardon the spelling) - is useful in fighting c diff. Has anyone used this with positive results?

Thanks. I'm the wife/advocate/researcher of/for my wonderful husband who has had UC for 20 years. FYI his IPAA was in 2004. He's had c diff before but not in a very long time - like maybe 15 years or more. We are very thankful for that!

Any other c-diff related advice greatly appreciated. I plan on hosing down the house with bleach tonight!

C diff is pretty easily transmitted, as you clearly know from your bleaching plans. S. Boulardi (Florastor) may help prevent C. Diff for folks on antibiotics or otherwise at risk. I don't know if does anything to help treat an infection. If the antibiotic (usually Flagyl or Vancomycin) doesn't clear the infection it turns out that FMT (Fecal Microbiota Transplant) works brilliantly. This is basically a stool transplant from a tested/cleared donor. Good luck!
