So i've been going on j pouch.org for a while now but never actually posted on the forums so this is my first post haha.. So my question is about weight loss with a loop ileo. In January of this year I had a total colectomy because my colitis had gotten out of control and wasn't responding to steriods so I was left with no option but to get rid of my colon and was left with a end ileostomy.. Anyway with that end ileostomy I went from 140lbs to almost 180lb (which btw is my natural weight when I'm healthy) in about 8 weeks, putting weight on with a end ileo was so easy and it was so easy to manage. But with this loop ileo ( Had jpouch surgery in may and was left with loop ileo ) I can't seem to gain a single pound no matter how much I eat, literally every thing I eat goes straight through me.

So my question is when I have my takedown on 5th september ( next monday ) will I gain weight like I did when I had a end ileostomy or will it just be like having a loop ileostomy and struggle to gain weight ?

Thanks.

Yeah. I had my end ileostomy due to a UC flare up.

Once completely recovered, I reached my normal weight relatively easy.

During pouch surgery, I lost weight, which, I believe was due to a loss of appietite for 10 days.

During my time with the loop ileostomy, although my weight wasn't necessarily a concern, I lost another 12lbs but my weight slowly began to increase.

Within 2-3 months after takedown, my weight started to increase and 12 months later, my weight had returned to what I consider normal.

GOOFEEGUTZ, yeah with a loop ileo it took me a while to get my appetite back but even when I was eating I still wasn't gaining any weight at all. Currently I weigh 142lbs and I'm eating more now then when I was 175lbs when I had my end ileostomy. I'm having my takedown a week before yours so hopefully after the takedown we can put some weight on haha

I had my takedown August 8.  So, although I have not lost weight, I have maintained what I was prior to takedown.  I also found it difficult to gain weight with loop iileo.  I initially lost 35 lbs. when I was at my worse, so going into surgery I had gained back 20 of those lbs.  Still about 15 short of my ideal weight.  I understand it does take a while to start gaining again.  It will happen eventually.

Thanks for wishing me well.. the takedown on monday went well. The takedown was nothing compared to the first 2 ops, it doesnt even feel like ive had a operation. Ive been going to the toilet about every 3 hours but i have no urgency what so ever and i can hold on if i need to....im currently waiting to be discharged from the hospital after a 3 day stay and looking forward to what life holds with a jpouch!!!

Just occured naturally, no special diets or foods, just ate what I've always ate.

I would eat pasta, chicken, pork, tuna or any fish for that matter, bake potatoes with various fillings but after a while, I came to the conclusion that what I ate made little difference.

There's only so much protein the body requires and any excess the body will dispose of it.

If you over indulge, especially without regular activity, there's a tendency to develop fat in areas of the body where it's difficult to shed.

@Goofeegutz Hey man.. i'm doing great with my j pouch, I still can't believe how easy it was to recover from this operation. My appetite has went through the roof and I can't stop eating, I actually love the j pouch it has given me my life back. 2 days after I left the hospital I travelled 4 hours down the country to go watch a football match and i'm doing it again tomorrow, Ino i'm probably doing way to much so soon after surgery but honestly I have so much energy because of the j pouch I just can't stop, I just want to go out and make up for the time wasted suffering from ulcerative colitis. Good luck with your takedown on the 14th mate I hope it goes as smoothly as mine did

Hate this IPAD!  Glad you're doing so well!  I also have had a good experience so far.  And just starting to gain some weight!  6 weeks out and also loving my pouch-especially not having urgency.  This time last year, I was driving home from my sister's and wasn't able to make it home without having an accident.  Definitely made the best decision for me!
