Any recommendations for a great j-pouch surgeon with laproscopy experience?

We had a surgeon selected, and received received letter from his office that he had resigned.  Husband has UC and while he is doing ok right now, we want to have a surgeon lined up.  Prefer someone in N. Virginia or DC.  If we have to, will go to Johns Hopkins but prefer to be close to home.    There are not that many colo-rectal surgeons in the area and it is hard to tell from website what j-pouch experience they have.  The receptionist always says "everybody here does j-pouch" but that doesn't mean they are great.

Thanks!

I live in Rockville but I go to Johns Hopkins Hospital for pouch stuff. Its not because I couldn't find anyone here but because I lived in Baltimore and really liked the gastroenterologist I found up there and he only knows people around Baltimore. I see Bashar Safar at Johns Hopkins for anything that requires a surgeon. I would think there would be some around here but surgeons that do j-pouches aren't that common. You definitely want to go with someone who does them all the time if you actually need to have one made. I travelled from Alaska to Seattle to have my surgeries and it was worth it. I have very few problems with my pouch and had zero surgical complications. Safar has a lot of experience with pouches but I haven't had a surgical procedure with him (just dilations). Definitely ask how many surgeries they do a week/month and bring a list of questions about the options for how its done. I don't remember the details from my consults because it was 16 years ago but we talked to at least 3 different surgeons before selecting one.
