Hi all,

After a few bouts of pouchitis that I was able to ride out, I finally caved and asked my doctor for antibiotics. He had previously suggested 7 days of Cipro several months ago (I declined and tried changing my diet and leaning on probiotics at the time). He has routinely told me he'd rather try Cipro before Flagyl, yet when his nurse called me last week she tried to give me Cipro and Flagyl together - I voiced my dismay at how this was inconsistent with what I'd previously discussed with my doctor (it's a large medical center and individual care plans are often eschewed for "standard treatments" if you're not vigilant) so I put my foot down and said I'd only take the Cipro, knowing that antibiotics can really wreck me. (Sure enough, the pouchitis is clearing up, but I have a yeast infection, a rapid heart rate, lightheadedness, and nausea. I can't imagine where I'd be with Flagyl in the mix!)

I also pointed out to the nurse that the initial suggested prescription was Cipro for 7 days, and she had prescribed it for 10. She said if I'm cleared up in 7 I can stop taking it, but not to take any less than 7 days worth. I'm probably going to suffer through the 10 just to be safe, but I'm wondering what length of time other folks typically take a course of Cipro for? I know everyone's different, so this question is really angled at folks that have mild-to-moderate pouchitis flares that they typically treat with Cipro alone.

Thanks!

Janine
