So I've had a lingering cough for almost 2-3 years now and finally got around to seeing a doctor about it.  I suspect it may be GI related.  I haven't really noticed much rhyme or reason behind the cough - I thought it was happening after I'd drink coffee, but it also happens at other times as well.

The doctor's prescribed course of action was that I begin taking Zantac regularly and if that eliminates the cough, then we could deduce that the trigger is acid reflux.  At that point, I could either take medication long term, or make lifestyle modifications.

At my pressing, she agreed to conduct an endoscopy.  My thinking was that I didn't feel comfortable with just a trial and error method and wanted someone to actually take a look at what was going on inside.  She said though that while the endoscopy could detect other maladies, it would not show any signs of acid reflux.  After confirming with billing, it appears my portion for the endoscopy would be over $700, after insurance.  I don't think this is worth it, at the moment.

What would you all recommend that I do?  While I understand Zantac is relatively harmless, I regret how I handled my colitis diagnosis 12 years ago.  I was told the medication I was being prescribed was also harmless, and upon taking it, my condition immediately exacerbated eventually becoming acute within a year.  I have no trust in doctors and I want to think things through better this time around rather than just blindly following the prescribed course of action.

I had a cough from age 16-18 then it came back at around 22 when I moved back home...would keep me awake at nights I would practically choke to death.

When I came to Paris for the 1st time it disappeared totally. Went back home and it came back.

Took me a while to realize that it was an alergy...I had a flocatty rug (sort of a sheepskin/sheep wool thingy)...that I used over my bed...turned out that I was terribly alergic to it...got rid of it and the cough left immediately.

I had bought it when I had redecorated my room at 16....you never know what can be at the origin of the coughs...try taking an OTC antihystamine for a week and see if it helps you.

If it does then you know that it is alergy based.

Gee, I'd just take the Zantac and see if it is useful. Endoscopies are invasive, and if you can use a cheap and easy way to rule out reflux, it just makes sense to me. You would not hesitate to take Tylenol for a headache, instead of scanning for tumors, eh?

If it does not help, that also is useful information. There are pulmonary extraintestinal complications of UC, so something else to consider if this is not reflux.

I'm with Jan on this. Endoscopy can be very useful, but not all upper GI conditions can be diagnosed that way. Your doc is most likely considering a diagnosis of LPR (laryngopharyngeal reflux), which is very had to definitively diagnose. Endoscopy would be useless to rule that in or out. The simplest way to make the diagnosis is a therapeutic trial: try the treatment and declare success if it works.
