Surgery was October 2012 for j pouch so 3 years ago and over last 6 months or so the nightime leakage has gotten so bad. I wear a pad at night but sometimes that's not even enough. Any suggestions for prevention of nightime leakage?
Here is my 2 cents since I have dealt with leaks a lot--load up on whatever anti-dirrhea meds you take right before bed (even Pepto), pull back on fluids after 6-7pm., go back to a strict diet for a bit to see if that calms things down, don't eat too late in evening, stay away from caffeine for a day or two if possible and best of luck
I do use Lomotil at bedtime, but since this is relatively new I suspect pouchitis. Perhaps 10-14 days of Cipro or Flagyl will clear it up. You'll know whether that's the right treatment within a day or two of starting, I expect.
I use lots of VSL (4 DS packets per day). Since I'm never in remission, it's the best I can do. When I reduced the VSL last year I started to have symptoms, so I *think* the VSL lets me get by with a lower dose of antibiotics. The studies showed a stronger effect at preventing pouchitis than treating it, but I think it can help with both.
It’s much harder to find than it used to be, but I get VSL #3 DS at Sam’s Club pharmacy. I don’t know if it’s true nationally, but in Maryland the pharmacy has to serve you even if you’re not a member.
Visbiome is almost identical (and is probably closest to the original VSL formula), and might possibly be easier to find.
