Hello all.

Well.  It has been a month.

Tomorrow.

Pouch  Removal and end ileosomy.

Now......

Does anyone here know how to deal with the irritated skin around the stoma?  Paste.. Powder have been used.

Dang... Stitches are starting... Well... Are pretty well gone.  But half of it is irritated.  Not bad enough for intervention but just plain stings.  How do they expect it to heal when it has to be covered full time?

It's not  leaking.  It just stings of course... Because it's irritated.... But when I move the appliance when laying down sitting... Twisting.

Will this eventually heal?

Any advice from anyone who has gone through this.

I wish it would heal so I could just get on with things.

This is my only complaint since surgery.

It seems and I knew this would happen.

Ya just trade one problem for another.

And I would say it's a pain in the butt.... But a little higher!

LOL.

Any advice from veterans of the bag would be appreciated.

Richard.

 P. S.

I know this should be in Osteomy and skin but I figured more would see it here.. Thanks All.

OK, just so you know. I never had the "luck" to have had an ileostomy. But, I do know a few things about wound healing. Yes, even covered, wounds can heal (sometimes better than when open). For peristomal irritation, it is all about getting a perfect seal. Stoma pastes and powders don't always provide that perfect seal. You may not think it is leaking, but when you have a weepy wound/skin edge, it is really hard to get that seal. Minute amounts of liquid can seep by capillary action, even though you think you are not leaking. It does not take much to keep the burn going once the top layer of skin is raw.

I suggest you try Eakins Seals http://www.eakincohesiveseals.com and/or Ilex Paste https://www.ilexhealthproducts...usd/instructions.asp People here and elsewhere have had great results with these products.

I didn't put any paste on this time and haven't had any powder on hand to use.  But I am gonna change and clean it up today using the powder.... Sparingly.... And put some paste there.

I just received some samples from convect.  They are the no cut turtleneck type of wafer.  I am gonna try that.  I would try a different wafer today anyways just to see if I can get any type of results... Better results anyways.

I did order some Eakins samples.  Thanks...

Yeah, ilex Protectant Paste is by the best, it's totally different to Stoma paste.

Stoma Paste is a filler which helps create a seal around the Stoma

Dont apply Stoma paste containing alcohol to sore, broken or oozing skin as it will burn/sting like hell and is very difficult to remove.... I speak from experience....... My Stoma nurse was ill informed,

Ilex paste will protect and heal the skin; it can be used to heal sore, broken and oozing skin around the Stoma or applied as a preventative measure before the skin has become sore/damaged.

I use to apply the ilex paste onto the back of a Salts stoma collar first, then fit the collar over my Stoma and then apply the ConvaTec mouldable Esteem synergy wafer, followed by the adhesive bag...... worked a treat.

I have Ilex Paste in my cabinet - I was afraid to use it early on when my skin was irritated because I was afraid that nothing would stick on top of it. I wasn't sure how to use it. Anyway, my skin cleared up after skin prep, powder applications and that was that. Can it be put directly on irritated skin and left to dry and that's that?....

Richard, definitely use a ring around your stoma before applying the bag. Jan's right, things do heal even under all that armor. My stoma and muscles were sore early on along with my skin, but that improved with time. Sometimes things feel/look/seem funky but are normal.
