So I'm constantly with pouchitis! So I've been on Cipro since July just 250mg to try keep it away. This however did not work and last week have been prescribed 1000mg a day of Cipro and 500mg a day of metronidizole (flagl) and my out put has gone from paste to just water! Metronidizole usually works for me but I feel like Cipro makes me worse! I'm a bit stuck!

Hi Steph,

Have you ever been prescribed a Mesalamine Enema? I can't tolerate Cipro at all, so my doctor usually prescribes me the Mesalamine, instead. I've had much success treating pouchitis this way. You're on a pretty high dose of Cipro and combining that with Flagyl can be rough on the stomach. I recommend asking your doctor about the enemas (you insert one nightly). I usually use them for 7 days straight then as needed when I start to feel the pouchitis flaring up again. I might also try a probiotic if you're not already on one. You could also take an anti-diarrheal if your still having watery stools.

Hang in there!

Hey! Thanks guys!
Flagl on its own usually works for me, but I don't know why I'm on Cipro too! I need to be on it indefinitely and if these don't work the next step is immunosuppressant! I take a probiotic and an on loperamide too to help with that! They tried to get me those enemas but can't get them where in from no where supplies them, so I tried different ones and they tended not to work either! Such a nightmare haha
Fingers crossed less Cipro helps!
