Hi guys, this is my first post. I have been referred to a surgeon because of multiple colon polyps (~60 across 5 colonoscopies), and we are currently considering our surgery options of subtotal colectomy, j-pouch, or ileostomy. We are leaning toward the subtotal, but I'm hoping I can hang out here and ask questions since there isn't a dedicated forum for sub totals.

- I'm currently active duty military. Is there anyone else out there that has been through a medical board after this surgery? I suspect my days in the field are over, but I'm not sure if they will let me stay in the military and just work staff jobs.

- I spend a lot of time flying small aircraft and can often need to go without a restroom for 2-4 hours. I know that outcomes of these surgeries vary significantly, but is there a decent chance that I could functionally return to flying someday? I could certainly adjust diet to help, but I don't think that the FAA will allow drugs outside of Imodium.

Thanks for any help that you can offer!

Jason

With a subtotal colectomy, your function should be pretty good. This is especially true if you retain your rectum. I am not sure if you have FAP or what, but it does not appear that you have UC.

I had a total proctocolectomy with a j-pouch and I can go 2-4 hours without needing the restroom and I have chronic pouchitis.

But the bigger question is the issue of passing your medical. I have heard from others that even a diagnosis of a bowel disease can be a non-starter, but since you are "in" maybe they make allowances. Hopefully some active service folks will chime in with answers for you.

I had UC and was AD. You will get an MEB and will likely found to be unretainable.  You 'might' be able to appeal to the PEB, but depending on recovery time and how you fare doubtful you can fly.  Go to the AR on medical care, it's a PDF you can check.  Since the issue will be living in austere environments.  Don't know how long you have been in, but if you are an officer or close to retirement then you have a chance at being retained non deployable, but really it depends on the MOS.  I was guessing you are WO so that is always a grey area.  I was found 'unfit' but PEB overrode because I was MC, but when you can make rank life gets far more tricky.  Let us know what you learn.
