My daughter just started bleeding with bowel movements and has no other symptoms or problems, she is freaking out. She recently had a scope in August and dr said some mild pouchitis but all looked good. She told me last night and today she ate popcorn, but she has eaten it before. She was also started on Norethisterone, a birth control pill, that she has to take for a week, until she has a poylp removed from her cervix on Friday 11/6. So those are the only changes in the past 48 hours. She called the dr's service and the on call fellow said to stay hydrated and call to get into dr on Monday, unless she feels the need to be seen in ER.

Any ideas on this?

There is bleeding and bleeding...drops or more? Is there a bit of blood or a lot?

A bit can be anything from irritation on through.

If it is a bit of blood I wouldn't worry ( a little goes a long way to stain the bowl) but if it is a lot then she should put in a 2nd call.

I have a 24hr cut off point...anything under 24hrs I handle but if it goes beyond I get myself to a doctor or ER.

Hope that it turns out to be nothing serious.

Thank you Sharon,

In the past 2 hours she has gone 5 times. She says she has a sense of urgency but it can also be the panic of wanting to keep checking to see if she is still bleeding. I can't tell if its a lot, she lives hours away from me, but she says it is and then again it is in water so I don't think she is even sure....

At this time she said she is staying hydrated and waiting to see if she has to go to the ER. Of course we hope it stops and she can see dr on Monday.

Thank you. The 24 hour rule is a good idea, if she is comfortable with it.

A little trick that she can try (if she has the stomach for it)...when next she goes, she should try to use a container or a plastic ziploc bag (I can see the commercials now...)...that way she (and the doctor) can better judge the amount of blood in her stool. (she can freeze it to make sure that it is not altered before she takes it in (just don't forget to take it out of the freezer...nasty suprise in 6 months if she doesn't).

When you use the bowl you cannot really tell how much blood there is...this way it is not diluted.

Hydration isn't enough if she is losing a lot of blood...electrolytes are needed (water, salt, sugar and a multi vitamin (chewable) every couple of hours (not the vitamin)...

Tell he to check here BP and heart rate too...good indicators along with her temp to check for infection.

I have an app on my Samsung (never would have thought that I would like it but...) it checks my oxygene saturation, heart rate etc...and it helps...probably does body temp too...those are important pieces of infor that can help the doc...

A racing heart, or to the contrary a low heart rate, sweats, temp, dizziness etc can indicate that she needs to go to ER immediately.

Give her call-in times like every 3-4hrs just to check in with you...it will reassure her and you.

Hang in there.

Sharon
