Hi, previous to my surgery I was quite active amongst other things running and swimming.  I have been quite nervous to go back to either especially running.  I am afraid of getting caught far away from home and having to use the washroom.

Any tips from those who run?  I prefer running in the morning but my pouch is usually pretty active first thing in the morning.

Thanks.

Unless, you are running really long distances, if you empty your pouch before you head out, I would think you'd be fine.  I run, but usually only 2 miles at a time, sometimes 3.  We're talking a half hour or less though.  If you're a long distance runner and plan to be out for a couple hours, maybe you plan for a pit stop half way through and circle back home.  When we travel, we love to hike.  We can be on a trail for a few hours.  Usually one Imodium during the day will take care of everything.  If you are concerned, just take one a half hour before you start your run.  Happy running!

I run fairly regularly and find I don't have a great deal of difficulty needing to empty. I find once I start running it kind of shuts down.  Once I've emptied a couple of times first thing in the morning it's not very active the rest of the morning. It's when I stop running that it hits me. I like to have a toilet nearby at the end. I also find that when I run longer than 10 miles it seems to set me up for needing to go much more frequently the rest of the day and the gut feels a bit unsettled. I am questioning the benefit of the longer runs. I haven't run a marathon since my surgery and I'm not sure that I will. Having said all this, I'm sure it makes a difference how far from surgery you are.

(imodium is a good idea as mentioned - I don't use it too much now but did previously)

I'm very active myself - I'm a runner, I horseback ride, and I do yoga classes at least 3 times a week. I've never had to stop an activity to empty my pouch. I don't really have any specific secrets or tips to share, other than the fact that I ALWAYS empty my pouch immediately before a run or just before I get on my horse, or before starting my yoga class. I tend run at different times depending on the day, so that doesn't seem to be a factor.   Oddly, I have noticed that it seems when I'm more active, my pouch is actually less active. I seem to be more interrupted when I'm at work (I have a desk job) or sitting around the house. Even in the odd occasion that I do feel I have to go during a run, I have always been able to defer until a more convenient time.
