the first thing you MUST do is to install a bidet on your toilet seat. the rash is caused by the acid in the stool, when you had a colon the acid was removed in the slow process of the colon. you can get an attachment for about 100$, it will connect to your hot and cold water. dont waste money on the ones that heat the water and havedrying fans etc. you dont need them. all you have to do is wash the acid off after EVERY stool. the stomach acid thats coming out will take your skin OFF, it will never heal no matter what silly barrier cream you put on. I do use Bag Balm if i have rectal skin damage. as others have said diet is important too. i've had the pouch for 13 years now, i travel and do most anything i used to do before i got colitus. I have a battery operated hand held bidet i use traveling.
I tried lots of creams for the first several months and then one day found a leftover tube of proshield plus that I used around my stoma. I tried it and it works great and a skin protectant and barrier. I had my surgery 13 years ago and I keep a tube at home, at work, in my truck, at deer camp and anywhere else that I frequent. I have never seen it in the store but the pharmacist can order it.
I also used the ARD pads (butterfly shaped) for the first several years and then realized I was OK without them. Some of the cream gets on my underwear but never shows through my pants so I stopped spending that money. BTW, when I exercise I use the proshield plus very liberally.
Hello, someone mentioned a bidet. I have a bidet campers use called Boulder Bidet. It is very portable and very effective. It is a plastic bottle with a long nozzle and a spray tip.
I am not sure is I can mention specific products here, so sorry if I did a bad thing by mentioning the product name.
No worries! Mentioning specific products or even providing a link to them is fine. If it is related to j-pouch issues, you should be OK. Otherwise it may be difficult for others to find some of these things.
What isn't fine is using this site to get free ad space. We have had problems with spammers registering only for this purpose. We are trying to stay on top of them, but it is a daily struggle.

Straining on the toilet can get you into various kinds of trouble. It's hard to communicate how much pushing is too much, but it's best to try to find a way to go easy on youself in the bathroom. Accepting a looser stool can sometimes help.
Candice, in my opinion ilex Protectant Paste is by far the best product to alleviate butt burn/rash.

Prior to a recommendation from this very forum; I used every ostomy cream, powder and potion I could get my hands on and nothing worked.
The skin around my Stoma was red raw, oozing and very painful.
Within hours of applying the ilex Paste there was a noticable difference; within 3 days the festering wound had gone.
Just after takedown, I experienced excruciating butt burn which was also alleviated by applying the ilex paste
Its a few months since my takedown and every so often, I do endure butt burn, nothing serious and once I've applied the ilex paste, the sensation is normally banished; rarely does the burning or itching sensation last more than a few minutes.
I don't use a bidet either, nor do I wet the TP before use, although I do use wet wipes rather than TP.
I also eat what I want, when I want with no adverse effects.
I had my take down about 15 years ago and the BB was the most horrible pain ever. I feel so sorry for you but it is very common. Believe me, it will go away but until then you need to get on line and order some tubes of ILEX. I tried all the off the shelf stuff and nothing works...... I little pea size dab on ILEX spread around where it hurts is all you need. Maybe once in the morning after a shower and at night before you go to bed and have cleaned you bottom. It is a moisture barrier and sorta sticky but your BB will not hurt and you will heal quickly. I have not had BB for about 14 years now. My little grandson had a problem with antibiotics that took away his good bacteria so he was pooping all the time..... his diaper rash was horrible. I sent a left over tube of ILEX and he his diaper rash was eliminated in a couple of days. Even his doctor was amazing and checked out ILEX. He recommends it to other kids now. Believe me, it works!
Hope you feel better soon.
I just ordered Ilex. If is can have one product that works all the time I will be a happy camper.
I, also, asked my doc about the questran. He was not in favor of using this product. I don't know why as we were going to be starting my pouchoscopy and didn't have time for a discussion. I see him again soon and will get more information.
I will follow up with the results of the ilex.
Questran certainly has a longer list of possible side effects than most other methods of dealing with butt burn. As a last resort it definitely beats suffering, but it's best to try the gentler tools first.
Whenever my behind gets irritated, I put a small amount of Balneol on a cotton ball and place it at your anal opening. If it is really bad, you could smear some around the area. It is very effective and works amazingly quick. I can be very sore when I go to bed and wake up with no irritation. Balneol is available at drugstores as an OTC, small white plastic bottle. Worth every penny.

I had my surgery in 2001. My husband installed a hose with a spray, like on a sink, to the faucet in the bathroom and I water cleanse before patting dry. We just changed to a bidet addition to the toilet for less than 30.00 on amazon and it works great as well. I think water cleaning prior to patting dry is essential. Any flair ups, I use calmosetine and it works great.
