Hi , my name is Candice I'm 18 years old and I had take down surgery about 2 weeks ago. I have HORRIBLE butt rash and  I really don't know what to do. I am currently using destine and it helps somewhat but not really , I would also like to know will this be a regular norm. Like will I have to live with butt rash for the rest of my life ?
Any help is much appreciated !
thanks

There are many, many other creams available out there. I suggest trying others. I generally think everyone's skin ph is different, and what works for one doesn't work for all. My favorite through the years has been A&D ointment, the clear petroleum one.

Sitz baths to soak your sore butt might help, too.

Watching what you eat right now can also help. Not sure of your diet. For me, things like granola or nuts will tear me apart. I doubt early on you're eating that, but kind of review what it is that's going in in case it's part of the issue.

It should not be your norm now... It isn't for most of us. I rarely use ointment on a day to day basis, there are occasional times I need it, though.

the first thing you MUST do is to install a bidet on your toilet seat. the rash is caused by the acid in the stool, when you had a colon the acid was removed in the slow process of the colon. you can get an attachment for about 100$, it will connect to your hot and cold water. dont waste money on the ones that heat the water and havedrying fans etc. you dont need them. all you have to do is wash the acid off after EVERY stool. the stomach acid thats coming out will take your skin OFF, it will never heal no matter what silly  barrier cream you put on.  I do use Bag Balm if i have rectal skin damage. as others have said diet is important too.  i've had the pouch for 13 years now, i travel and do most anything i used to do before i got colitus.  I have a battery operated hand held bidet i use traveling.

I tried lots of creams for the first several months and then one day found a leftover tube of proshield plus that I used around my stoma.  I tried it and it works great and a skin protectant and barrier.  I had my surgery 13 years ago and I keep a tube at home, at work, in my truck, at deer camp and anywhere else that I frequent.  I have never seen it in the store but the pharmacist can order it.

No worries! Mentioning specific products or even providing a link to them is fine. If it is related to j-pouch issues, you should be OK. Otherwise it may be difficult for others to find some of these things.

What isn't fine is using this site to get free ad space. We have had problems with spammers registering only for this purpose. We are trying to stay on top of them, but it is a daily struggle.

Questran.
It's a prescription so you have to ask your Dr if it's OK for you.
It totally got rid of the burn I have had for a long time.
Its a powder you mix in water and it binds with the acids.
It says to use twice a day but I use it every other day and I have not had burn at all for around two months.  Even when I have episodes of what I call a flare where I have gone to the loo up to 30 times in a day.  No burn whatsoever.
I use no pastes... Creams or anything down there anymore.
I have mentioned it in other posts.
It is a huge relief.

Candice, in my opinion ilex Protectant Paste is by far the best product to alleviate butt burn/rash.
US:

Prior to a recommendation from this very forum; I used every ostomy cream, powder and potion I could get my hands on and nothing worked.

The skin around my Stoma was red raw, oozing and very painful.

Within hours of applying the ilex Paste there was a noticable difference; within 3 days the festering wound had gone.

Just after takedown, I experienced excruciating butt burn which was also alleviated by applying the ilex paste

Its a few months since my takedown and every so often, I do endure butt burn, nothing serious and once I've applied the ilex paste, the sensation is normally banished; rarely does the burning or itching sensation last more than a few minutes.

I don't use a bidet either, nor do I wet the TP before use, although I do use wet wipes rather than TP.

I also eat what I want, when I want with no adverse effects.

I had my take down about 15 years ago and the BB was the most horrible pain ever.  I feel so sorry for you but it is very common.  Believe me, it will go away but until then you need to get on line and order some tubes of ILEX.  I tried all the off the shelf stuff and nothing works......   I little pea size dab on ILEX spread around where it hurts is all you need.  Maybe once in the morning after a shower and at night before you go to bed and have cleaned you bottom.  It is a moisture barrier and sorta sticky but your BB will not hurt and you will heal quickly.  I have not had BB for about 14 years now.  My little grandson had a problem with antibiotics that took away his good bacteria  so he was pooping all the time.....  his diaper rash was horrible.  I sent a left over tube of ILEX and he his diaper rash was eliminated in a couple of days.  Even his doctor was amazing and checked out ILEX.  He recommends it to other kids now.  Believe me, it works!

Hope you feel better soon.

I just ordered Ilex. If is can have one product that works all the time I will be a happy camper.

I, also, asked my doc about the questran. He was not in favor of using this product. I don't know why as we were going to be starting my pouchoscopy and didn't have time for a discussion. I see him again soon and will get more information.

I will follow up with the results of the ilex.

Questran was the first thing she gave me when I had my colon removed and was released from the hospital.  In fact they were giving it to me in the hospital before they released me and I had a bag.
I use it every other day and that's good enough.
Directions say twice a day but I think that firms it up too much and makes it hard to go.  That may be why he didn't prescribe it.  I don't know.
From what I understand it binds with the acids and prevents the burn but it also slows and thickens.
I may be corrected on this.
I do know it works 100 percent.
This past week I went one day longer twice without it and the burn came back!  But if I drink it I notice it will be gone before the day is done.
I have used every paste  and none of it works like this does.
I have no burn whatsoever.

I understand. I will be seeing my doc again soon and I want more an explanation from him. He didn't say no, he just said that the action of the medication is such that it shouldn't be considered lightly. Each of us has a different situation. I can go for months without issues, then something changes and I am in suffer mode. I will let you know what he says.

Whenever my behind gets irritated, I put a small amount of Balneol on a cotton ball and place it at your anal opening.  If it is really bad, you could smear some around the area.  It is very effective and works amazingly quick.  I can be very sore when I go to bed and wake up with no irritation.  Balneol is available at drugstores as an OTC, small white plastic bottle.  Worth every penny.

I had my surgery in 2001.  My husband installed a hose with a spray, like on a sink, to the faucet in the bathroom and I water cleanse before patting dry.  We just changed to a bidet addition to the toilet for less than 30.00 on amazon and it works great as well.  I think water cleaning prior to patting dry is essential.  Any flair ups, I use calmosetine and it works great.
