Takedown was by far the easiest surgery to recovery from, I was discharged 4 days after.
I had full mobility, the only difficultly was getting up from sitting down due to the old Stoma site, which was left as an open wound, to heal from the inside out, it was covered with a dressing.

The only essential, which I happened to have, was ilex protectant paste;  it came in very useful just after surgery as I endured an anal itch and excruciating pain during BM's, the ilex made all the difference.

My hospital also supplied Clinell 7 in 1 wipes, which were a far better alternative to toilet paper:

For my self, ilex paste and the wet wipes were the only essentials.

Also, a peri-pad when you're using all that ointment down there keeps your underwear neat. I forgot a few times and ended up with greasy shorts when I was really slathering it on, as it was enough to go thru my underwear.

Good to know, where can A&D cream be found? Thanks

Had to do the final takedown twice after the first j-pouch had to be redone two years into it. Long story but none I'd like to go through a third time.

the one thing that saved my ass (literally) has been and still is ILEX paste. Its like latex on the skin around the "exit" . For me that is the only way to fight the butt burn.

calmoseptine works for a little while but in my humble opinion ILEX gives the most relief.

i order it through Amazon.

good luck !!!

like others have said, you need a cream. I tried a few and settled with calmospetine although I think the ilex may have given me better protection in the first few weeks.

I don't have a bidet at home so I bought a small handheld portable bidet which helped a lot.

also the clinell wipes are the best wipes out there. I still use them now

Toddi1973 - Sorry to hear you had to go through that, and hoping all is good now! Thanks for the advice. Ilex seems to be the go to cream!
