I'm sure that this topic has been discussed many times, but wondering how one stops stress before it hits the pouch (am I making sense)?

For the past number of months I have been dealing with excruciating pains and gas. I noticed this morning that I was extremely stressed and took even took a tranquilizer to calm my self down, something that I don't usually do. I was talking to someone and the conversation got a bit heated on my end only, and I became very stressed. Immediately, my stomach started to rumble, the pains went shooting through and I could feel a bit of liquid stool being released since I couldn't hold it back because it was so painful.

Has anyone had this happen to them, and if so, how have you stopped it? This is all new to me and has only happened over the past few months so it's something that I don't know how to control.

I just don't know what to do anymore and am getting am getting very nervous about it. My life seems to be centered around my stomach and I don't want it to be that way. I'm almost embarrassed posting this with everyone else's major problems. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. If tranquilizers aren't helping, what would, a lobotomy?

How old is your pouch? Mine has been functioning poorly the past year with stress or without and not really a food issue. My doc says after awhile pouch can do this. Have you looked into a pouchoscopy? Maybe time to see doc regarding symptoms as stress can be an issue with a lot of symptoms but should not be a major factor. Hope you feel better soon.

It sounds like the stress (in this case) is causing some GI upset rather than being caused by it. It doesn't, perhaps, matter whether the stress is having a direct physical effect, making physical circumstances less tolerable, or some of both. There are some medical causes of stress and/or anxiety, and you could ask your doctor to help check for/rule out the most likely candidates. You might consider looking for a good therapist, who should also be able to recommend some effective relaxation techniques. Good luck!

You don't need a lobotomy! We all get stressed and it affects our body.  Our colons are gone and with it went it's part in production of serotonin. Some our bodies might not be able to keep up with the increased workload.  That's where antidepressants and anxiety medications help.  I hope that whatever stressed you is over.

Do you have any prescription pain medication?  When my pain was so bad in February my PCP, who was my pain management doc, gave me permission to double the dose as needed until I got through that Mayo trip. I didn't need to use it very much.  It was reassuring to know I could use it if needed.  That reduced some of the stress. She also gave me a pain shot that helped.  I don't know what you can do as I only know what works in my case.

I hope you find some relief soon. We've had our new plumbing long enough we should know what to do. Just when we get it figured out another problem comes along. For some of us I mean. Years of chronic pain has strapped my resolve. I use to think I could handle anything, wrong. Having an impartial person, like my therapist, to listen, advise and treat me has helped me almost as much as this support group.

I don't use pain meds at all. Last night, though, my butt burn and stomach ache was so bad that I could not sleep. I used a Canasa suppository that I found and finally was able to doze off. I'm wondering now if part of it is cuffitis. I just don't know and am getting myself so stressed I don't know what to do. I am going to send an email to my surgeon tomorrow to see if he might have a clue as to what's going on. This is just endless and draining me completely.

Thanks for your support.
