Wanted to share with the group that I ran my first marathon in Barcelona while on vacation with my family. My 4:49 time is a bit shy of qualifying for Boston but I don't mind.

 

Hydration during the run went well. I wore an S-Lab Skin 5 Salmon vest (expensive but unparalleled comfort) with 5L of 80% coconut water and 20% water. This lasted me until mile 13 when I stopped at a fuel station to reload the bladder with powerade and water.

 

As for eating, I had a small amount of toast with pate along with a Saltstick rehydration pill prior to the start. I took another pill at mile 13 and a third at mile 20. During the run I had 4 GU gel packets and 4 Nutri grain bars. I had kept this exact regiment during my training runs so I knew it worked for me.

 

It's been about 2 years since my takedown and my health has been great. I have about 3 to 4 bowel movements a day rarely with urgency. Even with exercise I rarely feel dehydrated.

 

Not one to normally post about personal accomplishments but I hope this is encouraging.

 

Best of luck to others with exercise goals. Big or small, you can do it!

A friend and I were talking about how some folks who are very satisfied with their J-pouches may feel shy about posting here cause it may seem like gloating. 

In my opinion, it is fantastic to celebrate one of our own!  And to get a glimpse of a wide variety of experiences. Thank you for sharing!  Now go stretch!  ;-)

This is awesome! I ran my first marathon in 2013, just before I was diagnosed and went through emergency surgery for stoma.  I'm now 4 months on from having J Pouch Surgery & I really want to be able to do my second marathon but naturally just worried about how it's all going to work!

Congratulations.  I ran before my surgery (8 weeks ago) but have been nervous running at any significant distance because of the fear of having to use the washroom.  I am curious as to whether you used the washroom during your marathon?

Do you have any ritual as to eating before training so that you do not need to use the bathroom?
