For the past two years I have had episodes of pretty bad pain. At first I thought it was my intestines twisting.(Had lots of this before the reversal). Can pouchitis cause pain that comes and goes throughout the day? Also can it come and go over the course of months, with streaks of  good days and then get nailed with some bad? I can't link it to food. I am also extremely gassy. I see my doctor Friday but I feel like all of you can give me some insight and hopefully the doctor can help with meds or whatever else. (This dr. is my regular gastro guy, not my surgeon, and I am not sure how familiar he is with all of this).  Thank you in advance!

Could be pouchitis, but pouchitis should not have symptoms that come and go. I had intermittent pain, sometimes severe, in various points of my abdomen, along with gas pain, belching, diarrhea and urgency. Turned out I had severe pouchitis. But, even though the pain was intermittent, the stool frequency and gas were not. I presume I had bacterial overgrowth, along with full blown pouchitis.

If you have a history of obstructive symptoms, you may still have this issue. If you have chronic partial obstructions, it can lead to bacterial overgrowth and symptoms thare like pouchitis.

Yes, I may still be going crazy. I feel that way sometimes.  I called and got in to see my doctor and he is doing blood work, cat scan, sigmoid and endoscopy to try to figure everything out. He said, as you did, that it didn't seem to be pouchitis, but maybe IBS or celiac, or little obstructions causing all of this. Who knows but as long as it gets figured out. For now on Flagyl just in case it is pouchitis.

Thank you so much Jan. You are such a huge help with all issues. You are fantastic!

Sorry I didn't get back on sooner. I had a CT Scan which came back as nothing - just saw cysts on my ovaries. Sigmoid showed everything looked great from the bottom end, and endoscopy didn't show anything except maybe gastritis. Maybe it is food I am eating?  I really dont' know. I did have my IUD taken out because alot of this seemed to have started when I got it put in. I was told that when you ovulate, you have a chance of forming cysts which can burst. The IUD didn't prevent ovulating, like the pill does. So I am going to see how I am with it out. Also was put on 2 weeks of flagyl, which made me extremely nauseous. Not really sure if it helped, but now I am having colitis like symptoms. Rushing to the bathroom some pain. Sucks but hoping it will pass. I was wondering if being on flagyl when I didn't have pouchitis could cause this.

Anyway - hope this helps. And I hope you are feeling better!

Maybe it was bacterial overgrowth, which shows no evidence of pouchitis, and could improve with Flagyl.

Ovarian cysts can cause a lot of gut grief too, so maybe getting back on oral birth control (or the patch, or Norplant) will set you straight.

Something you ate should not cause problems for a prolonged time, unless it was food poisoning. Still, it should not return after antibiotics.
