I am local to the Cleveland Clinic so its in my backyard. I had jpouch in 2008 with numerous complications and infections. Last year it was found i had a tip of jpouch leak that gave me a spinal infection so i have a loop ileostomy again. My surgeon at the clinic tried to fix it with surgery in August but it failed. I'm thinking of seeing Dr Remzi now since he deals with problem jpouches. I have heard that his thoughts are if there are issues it should be removed and to start over. I have heard does not like to try and correct existing issues with current pouch. thoughts? I have been working with Dr.Shen as well. How long does it usually take to get a consult with him? I have heard its a long time, but since I'm an existing patient there should it be sooner than usual ??

When I was first considering surgery it took me 6 weeks to get a consult with him.  Once I decided to have surgery and wanted a consult from a different surgeon at the clinic, they would not schedule it until Remzi was removed from my record as the surgeon (even though he never operated on me).  So you may need to work with your current surgeon to get the consult, which could be good for you, because he can work to get you in ASAP.  My GI at the clinic made a few calls and got my consults moved up to within a week once I was diagnosed with high grade dysplasia.  So if the schedulers give you a date way into the future, then speak to your current surgeon or at least their staff, because things can be done to get you in ASAP.

I called, and soonest I could get in was July 6th. Remzi and my current surgeon actually work in the same office.. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing? I will contact my surgeon at some point and just give him a heads up that i am taking a consult with Remzi just to get another opinion. Nothing against my current surgeon. But I have dealt with issues for so long, I would just like an opinion of one of the best for a problematic pouch. I am in no rush, since I currently have no issues except dealing with this ileostomy that I hate.

HIS SECRETARY stated he only does consults on Mondays and they are not even all day. I'm honestly in no rush, I dont have anything pressing me to get in sooner. I always wonder if another surgeon did my initial surgery would things have gone differently. My surgeon is a Cleveland Clinic surgeon and was experienced in doing jpouches, but you always wonder

He is very busy. I have found that out over the last 4 years. My mom called everyday to get a opening for a sooner surgery 4 years ago, but I know he's only in office 1 day. And He travels all the time. I had an eua done in December he was in Cleveland Thursday's flew to Brazil and was back that Monday for my eua which was odd bc he usually is in office. But he is worth the wait. He is an amazing surgeon. His secretary is a very nice lady and she can help you out.

I had a surgeon to surgeon consult 2-3 weeks ago.  I got it arranged pretty quickly because my son had an immediate problem and needed surger quick.  It was with Dr.  Remzi.  You might want to try going that route if possible.

That said, who else is good out there with pouch problems?  in this consult, Remzi, he sugested redoing my son's pouch in 6 months.  we would like to try other options first, like some glue or some other things.  I saw someone mentioned another doctor that did repairs and I'm wondering if that would be a better option for us.

But it back to Dr. Remzi, when I first called for a consult, I think I called in Feb. and his secretary said they were booking into April!  I guess if I want a consult this summer I better call now!
