This has been getting worse over the last few weeks. Now it is constant. Within a few minutes after I eat anything I get wretched intense pain in lower abdomen for less than a minute, then I hear the loud gurgling. I get it several more times for a while. I also get it quite a lot not related to eating. My abdomen feels sore and I am having liquid BMs.

i thought maybe it was an obstruction yesterday and had mostly just liquids. But if I ate even a spoonful of rice, the whole thing started again. This has been taking such a toll on me because I keep going into spasms. I asked a doctor friend and he said it was IBS. I don't understand that I suddenly have this. I have been taking probiotics for years and haven't really changed my eating except maybe I've been eating less. Please, any ideas are welcome. Thanks.

In addition to what Jan suggested you might want to google IPS. That's what the official wording is for it after we get pouches.  There's one of Dr. Shen's, and others, studies that discusses using antibiotics for IPS treatment. It's been the same treatment as for pouchitis in my case.

You might want to consider a c.diff infection too.  I had it before and after my colon was removed. Cramping and watery BM's are symptoms for it too.

Lopermide, prescription Imodium, and/or Metamucil (I use generic gel caps) might slow things down.  If things don't respond to soft food and antibiotics I contract my GI and/or your surgeon. Whoever is taking care of your j-pouch problems.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

TE Marie
