hi everyone,

I  am 6 days post total colecomy and ileostomy. Surgery was laproscopic so they released me from hospital after two and a half days because they thought i could do better at home. I am having some problems:
i had one change in hospital and another at home with ostomy nurse and a third today as i felt the area was bothering me. There was some redness when i removed the paste and wafer in an area above the stoma. I removed with the adhesive remover, when i put the wafer i used the eakin seal, paste and covatec skin protector wipe on it. It is still hurting a bit, but i dont know the reason. Should i have added powder?

i am also having some problems with fluid retention in the lower stomach and above genital area (sorry, but its where they shave for surgery). My outout is not watery, it is pasty. i drink as much as i was told, water and OJ with water. i tried to limit sodium in food and drink because that can add to fluid retention. Fluid retention was better this morning when i woke up but things seem to be swelling up again.

So my questions are about my pain, i dont know if its skin related around the stoma, trauma related around stoma or water/fluid retention related.

any ideas? thoughts? solutions?

will get to PM soon after i solve this situation. i promise.

Only 6 days out, you will have pain here and there just from trauma of the surgery. I had, (and still sometimes have) pains around the stoma area, which I think is just stitches or skin pulling on the stoma/intestines.  If you are using eakin seals, then dont use paste with it. The eakin will seal down to the skin, and keep things from leaking. The paste will want to keep the seal from sticking down properly. There will be some redness just from wafer contact with the skin. only use the powder if you have a bleeding/weeping area, to dry it up. Blow off excess, and then cover with the skin protector. If the skin is not weeping, then just use the skin protectant, then apply eakin and wafer.

MarkGregory,

thank you :-)

ive had ostomy nurse come yesterday and she said the skin was ok. i figure the pain is maybe related to the trauma of the surgery in that area, that is opening the skin, cutting the small intestine, sewing it to the skin, all those nice things done to me while i was sleeping. The pain is not constant and not always in the same area.

My stomach is distended a bit around lower abdomen and the area of the stoma is a bit more swollen and delicate to the touch. I know eventually i will have to wear clothes and go out but just the thought of wearing something on this sends chills along my spine :-)

ok, will go to walk a bit around the house. K

I had mine Feb 18th!!  I have the same complaint of skin pain around the ostomy site.  I feel like my skin is very clearly red and irritated although not bleeding yet.  I have not ostomy nurse other than one 1 1/2 hours away.  :-(  You are lucky you have someone to come by.  My ostomy nurse wanted me to use the powder and spray when it was irritated.  I will follow because I need all the help I can get.

Oh, are you having discharge from the bum?  I was told expect some mucous but what I am getting is 1/4-1/2 c (approximate not measuring! lol) of tarry stool like stuff that is coming 3-5 times a day.  Doesn't hurt - figure it is normal and was reassurred by surgeon but I didn't think I was going to have deal with early 'butt burn' this soon.  (Already getting a little raw.

Hope you are up and moving soon!  We can do this!
