Hello Everybody,

I am recently post op 3 weeks from my take down. I had UC for about 14 yrs. before i stared having flare ups that wouldn't respond to any medication.

I was presented with to options. 1. Go to a Mayo Clinic and have my immune system wiped out with radical biological drugs; with no guarantee of remission or 2. Have my colon removed, ilestomy and then take down.

I am married and my daughter at the time was 3.5 years old and I did not want her to grow up watching her father being constantly sick from UC. So, we elected for the surgical option.

It has been trying to say the least. Probably the most difficult now that I am using my small intestine and J-Pouch as a pseudo colon. Lack of sleep is really kicking my ass. But it has been helpful to find a support community with others who have had the same experience.

My last Dr. appointment was as least encouraging, when he told me I was exactly where I was supposed to be. I look forward to meeting others via this support group in the future.

Welcome!

3 weeks post takedown, you're still very early on and you can expect considerable improvements over time. The key is to be patient - it's not an easy process, but most of what you are experiencing will be temporary, and you will begin to notice improvements as you heal and as your system adjusts. This is a great group of people and we're happy to offer advice and support! Hang in there!

I am 11 months since my surgery and boy things improve at a snails pace. But trust me they do improve! I have just started to get some decent sleep. It was driving me crazy not getting g sleep but just have patience as said above. You are fresh from take down and this is very serious surgery to recover from. You are asking or getting your body to do something it is not supposed to do and it takes a while for your body to acclimate to it. I never dreamed it would take this long. But I am improving everyday and pleased to be. You are improving everyday too but will not notice until one day you think to yourself that hey... It's not doing this or that anymore.
Patience. One thing I don't have.
Good luck. Things will get better.
Richard.
