Hi. I finally was in touch with my surgeon. I'm going for an EUA on Wednesday. Probably will leave with at least 1 seton. He thinks the 3 abscesses I have are coming from one place, so he wants to find the source.

I don't know anything really about the EUA. How does it work? How do they decide where to go in? What is the recovery time after the 'surgery'?

An EUA is evaluation under anesthesia. They look in through you bottom. In my experience it's like having a colonoscopy, there really is no recovery time. When you get up you hang out awhile and off you go. Now if they do anything, like stitches or the seton it could be a little longer. Did they tell you that you have to stay in the hospital after the procedure.

EUA's are fine but I'd ask them if they could put some local anesthetic in the area. I found after my first one, I was sore down there from the scope. That doctor referred me to a specialist who had to do another EUA and he shot my bum up with local and it helped me feel like I healed a little quicker.

Mostly I say this because if you're already tender down there, you may feel real sore after from all the scoping and what not. I had a seton placed and hardly notice it now. I have a anal/recto-vaginal fistula that keeps getting infected, so it's sore. Hopefully they can find the fistula and abscess.

Hang in there!

I just had a seton placed a couple weeks ago and it was an in and out procedure. I was knocked out just like they do for a colonoscopy. Woke up a little sore and they had me go to the bathroom with a couple pieces of guaze to change from the original ones they places there. When I went into the bathroom and removed the gauze I had a decent amount of blood dripping. You will experience pain afterwards with the seton. It took me about a week to start moving around the way I wanted. Make sure you eat things that will move through without getting constipated they advice to take a fiber supplement to keep things moving. It can get very uncomfortable if you have to strain I know from experience, The stitches where they get tied together are annoying for a little because they poke into your skin. Wiping after going to the bathroom is tricky also be very careful depending where the seton is placed. Iwould advice using wipeys which I'm sure you probably use currently anyway. I'm pretty sure my drainage stopped a couple days ago which I'm pretty happy about. Good Luck you'll be fine I'm sure.

I've had a seton for over a year. The first one I had (that broke in the office) took away the pain and quit the site draining; the replacement has never felt great, has its own "cycle," and it has a small mucus drainage all the time that necessitates wearing a 2X2 gauze.

I can't get a Crohn's dx, because otherwise, everything looks "too good."

But the EUAs are nothing. I request actually no fentanyl or versed, only Propofol and IV Tylenol (yep, IV), so I can wake up and not be groggy.

I've had two EUAs, one in June and the other last Tuesday. I had a bit of draining for a day after the initial EUA. Dr. Shen and Dr. strong at Cleveland Clinic cleaned up an abscess. Then, I had another emergency one done last week with Dr. Hull at Cleveland Clinic. I had an abscess form very quickly that ended up being quite large 6cm x3cm. They had to remove a 2 inch patch of skin that was very infected and also placed a seton. I'm still incredibly sore and unable to walk because of its location. My surgeon said that it will probably take 6 or more weeks to heal and may take longer because I am taking Humira.
