The skin under the wafer is beginning to break down; red and irritated, several small raw spots, spreading daily. I don't know if this is from the removal wipes or the wafer, or what. The adhesive from the wax rings is HORRIBLE to get off, although Sharon's advice about oil is helping. Which disolvant do people prefer to remove the oil? Right now pretty much everything hurts.

New bad this morning and I'm already itching and in pain from all the raw spots... Am leery to call the ostomy nurse as she warned me last time that there was nothing else they could do but re-do the stoma surgically (almost completely stenotic). My surgeon doesn't want to do that as it will delay the pouch advancement surgery to fix the @!#%$ fistula. I hate going to the hospital, especially on the weekend, when there's nothing they can do anyway.

Any thoughts?

Stop all the removers and prep wipes. Instead, when you remove the bag, take a shower and use your fingernail to gently scrape away any residue. Or you can use a facecloth if you aren't showering.

I CANNOT use any of those prep pads or adhesive removers. THey cause way more problems than they prevent.

Go with as little as possible. I do stoma powder if irritated, eakin and wafer and that is IT.

I also agree with the other posters, don't worry about getting all of your Eakin residue off. I get most of it off but there is always some there when I go to apply my new wafer.

Those barrier rings are designed to be very soothing and healing for the skin, so it's better to leave bits of it on rather than rub your skin to get it off.

I would NOT use any oils or dissolvants, other than wipes made for the peristomal area, as they can further irritate the area and/or make it very difficult to get good skin/wafer adhesion.

How is everything going now?
