Had J-pouch for 19 years due to UC - due to CEA's, I had gone to Drs. Went to hospital w/colo/rectal Dr. Infection was treated - came home, received call to come right back in and told I had colon cancer and even Dr was surprised - She has no colon. Oncologist said they were going to treat this as rectal cancer as to be honest with him, he had never seen it before. I SEE K-POUCH here - please define. Many decisions = Am going for 2nd opinion znc don't want to wait too long

Unfortunately, rare as it is, there are documented cases of cancer in the ileal pouch. Most cancers, though, arise from the retained rectal tissue. For most of us, only 1-2cm of rectum is left behind. But, even if it was completely removed, stray cells can pose a risk.

If there was cancer or dysplasia before surgery, the cancer risk is higher. Everything I have read indicates that if there is recurrent cancer or new cancer in the rectal cuff or pouch, removal and ileostomy is the only safe route to follow.

It might be possible to do a Kock pouch (k-pouch), but I doubt they would consider it until she is done with chemo and radiation, and in tip-top shape. It is a big surgery, as is the j-pouch removal surgery. So best to focus on one thing at a time. Still, it makes sense to look forward to the future possibilities.

I hope your daughter does well.

No this is not a reoccurence - 2nd worse case of ulcerative colitis that Hopkins had seen - only one Doctor said he would go the save the rectum route that was 19 years ago - and althopugh Dr has moved he has referred her to another team at Hopkins - I see they have the Sidney Kimmel Ctr there - the diagnosing Dr is where they saved my life in DC - but does not have a NCIS affiliation and I see they are promoting it more and more - are we allowed to say hospital names - we head for Ohio Tuesday as soon as I get a typhoid biopsy - which is 7 hours away
