I had a permanent ileostomy on 6/25/12 followed by a partical blockage then had my gallbladder out. What an ordeal. For those of you that had the rectum sewn up I have a question. The area is very sore today when walking in the mall. The area is red like butt burn when I had the j-pouch and red areas where the staples were taken out. I was given no instructions for care but I see the surgeon on Tuesday. As always any insight appreciated,

gmarie- my wound was not sewn or stapled shut. It was left open to heal. I think surgeons each have their preference of method in dealing with this wound. I have been strictly instructed to put no creams or anything in the area. My healing instructions might be different because I had major abscesses there while in the hospital and also another abscess just a month ago that burst and landed me back for another surgery to clean it up and drain it more.

Sitz baths help a bit. Also, I have been instructed to spray the area several times a day with a handheld shower. My perianal wound is still extremely painful amd am now 4 months from the initial surgery. I have been told it may take a year for it to fully heal.
