I suspect you are eating the crappy processed instant oatmeal with sugar, and not cooking it sufficiently, go for Quaker old fashioned and cook it well.
Hi Spooky,
i am only 4 months since Jpouch. And I am doing good. Learning which foods are good and not.I like steel oats and not sure if I can still eat them without issue?
I have issues with gas and bloating when eating oatmeal. (I eat the old-fashioned kind and not the hyper processed. I sweeten with a little brown sugar or stevia.) I usually take three Beano tablets when I eat it. For me it prevents the gas from becoming an issue later.
My pouch seems to love oatmeal. I typically top it with fruit and that can cause issues (fresh blueberries are a no-no but are fine if I cook them in the oatmeal). I wanted to point out there were three types of oatmeal-the sugary, processed, flavored type that tend to come in packets, the slow cooked oats such as traditional, plain Quaker Oats and steel cut oats. The processed flavored oatmeal can take 60 to 90 seconds in the microwave, the slow cooked oats take a couple of minutes on the stove top and in the microwave and the steel cut take quite a bit longer, I believe up to 20 minutes to cook. Steel cut oats have a lot of fiber. If that’s the type you’re eating, that could be the problem and you may need to start with the more processed type (least amount of fiber) or try the slow cooked oats (some fiber but less than steel cut). The pouch changes over time so I agree, give it a try again down the road.
I eat oatmeal pretty much everyday. I get the slower cooking, either Bob’s Red Mill or The Farmers we Know sprouted oats. I mix with some plain yogurt, fresh berries, banana and chopped walnuts. I put a little almond milk in also. Doesn’t seem to cause any issues with my pouch.
Thank You for All your input I will use the regular oats and try steel oats down the road. Im curious about nuts. I thought nuts were a big no no. I tried eating macadamia nuts about 2 months after my J pouch surgery and it was rough for a few days.
still learning
I use finely chopped walnuts, but I also eat cashews. I haven’t had a problem with them
I can eat nuts, but need to remind myself to chew, chew, chew The finer they go down, the better for my pouch.
that is AWESOME news, I will wait awhile but, I will try in small quantities,
Thanks again for thei inpiut.
I eat lots of nuts and seeds. I have a salad every day for lunch and put raw pumpkin seeds in it. I also eat pistachios, cashews and sunflower seeds. No issues eating them but I do chew them well. Chewing all foods well is crucial with a Pouch otherwise it comes out undigested.
I also drink cashew, almond and coconut milks. I get the unsweetened varieties. They are really good. Califia Farms make the best nut milks, although if you can't find it Silk is pretty solid.
Oatmeal moves things long for me, the only fiber I can tolerate lol
You might want to check out if the type of oatmeal you are eating is high FODMAP. Some oatmeals are... you might have a sensitivity. Maybe try a low FODMAP oatmeal and see if that makes a difference!
I'm good with oatmeal, provided I soak the oats in milk overnight before cooking them.
