I have had my j pouch almost one year now in late september. My first couple months was really tough, I had pouchitis several times and it seemed not controllable until I started taking VSL DS twice a day in December of 2011 and since that time I have had no pouchitis and feeling great! However, even with my insurance, 3 months supplies cost $100 and I would like to start cutting back to maybe 1 per day to reduce that cost. I would ask my surgeon but she is new to the VSL thing as well, didn't know about it until I heard it from people on here. Is there a good way to cut back or should I just keep doing the same?

Thanks,

Jason (FAP diagnosed in 2002)

Jason,
Coming from someone who has been dealing with chronic pouchitis for over a year and on long term antibiotics for it, it is worth every penny to keep the pouchitis monster at bay. I also take VSL3DS ( 3 times a day) and that is my GI's recommendation. It really does help me also, but not enough to get off antibiotics entirely.
Although I know the cost is high for the VSL3, to me this is much easier to deal with than
the pain and discomfort of pouchitis.
J
