Hi Everyone,
So my periods have been super painful lately, and I've been putting up with it. Well I'm done. I get really bad cramps during my period, and when I go to empty my pouch this makes me cramps hurt way worse. Like the pushing makes it hurt soooo much. This makes me constipated, as I associate the intenses pain with that. It hurts sooo much. I'm thinking of using birth control to lessen my 6 day period and make pain not occur. Any suggestions? I can't deal with weight gain or any other harsh symptoms, and I have to talk to my mom about it as I'm a teen. I'm just sick of the pain.

Thanks(:

Yes, talk to your mom. I believe many women take the pill to regulate periods and reduce painful symptoms like you're having. I was on the pill for years, didn't gain weight because of it, and it cleared up my acne (awesome!).
The only thing is that I've read on several hospitals' websites that the pill may not be fully absorbed in jpouch patients bc it could go through our system too quickly. My surgeon disagreed but my ob/gyn put me on the depo shot to be safe. Also, antibiotics decreases the efficacy of the pill, so if you are sexually active and on antibiotics you should be aware.
Good luck!

My OBGYN has been pushing me for 3 years to start birth control to help with my periods. I have horrible periods that come every 21-24 days, last for 7 days, heavy bleeding, and horrible effects on the pouch. I've been reluctant though as I'm so tired of medications and on antibiotics all the time. She suggested the Nuva ring or whatever it's called. I'm still considering it, but it would likely make these issues much better.

I have no problem absorbing the birth control pill with my pouch, and I take active pills continuously so I only have a period 2-3 times per year. My periods are really not that bad, even with the pouch, but I find it to be a big hassle (needing to change my tampon every time I have a BM) so I just prefer to skip it. It works well for me!

I was going to suggest the same thing as Pluot. There are low dose oral contraceptives that are safe to take for long stretches. I used Alesse and took them regularly so that I only had a period 4 times a year.
You need to work with a physician or gynaecologist who know what they are doing and you are able to keep your lines of communication open.
On an aside, I am wondering if you should be investigated for endometriosis? This could be a reason that your periods are so debilitating and affecting your j-pouch so much.
