Hi All,
So I am getting my pouch scoped for the first time, since its been 2 years (maybe 3) since my last surgery. I've had three blockages since (all hospitalized with NG tube)but I'm fine now. Anyways, I was just wondering what prep/recovery is for scopes? How long do they take and how long will I be impatient recovery for? Will it be like my colonoscopies and endoscopies? Will I be sedated? I think I will because I am a teen, and they said I have to do prep where I can't eat and do some form of thing that empties my pouch.

I tried googling about scopes and all the info was different so please let me know

It's just like a colonoscopy, but with a shorter scope. The procedure only takes about 10 minutes, and the only prep I have done is fast from the afternoon before, and used a couple of enema rinses 15 or 20 minutes before the scope. I've never had sedation. It can be uncomfortable for short periods, but not terrible. ( When the pouch is expanded with gas for examination,it feels like you have to poop really bad.) I was told the discomfort was mostly from my pouch being very inflamed at the time.
I've had two scopes in the last six months, with many biopsies. Biopsies don't hurt, though sometimes you can feel a slightly tugging sensation in the pouch.

I've had it done with and without sedation. One time was enough for me to see what it looked like inside and every since I've chosen sedation. It is uncomfortable, especially if you have cuffitis and/or pouchitis. I figure I've had enough pain to last a lifetime so whenever I can avoid it I do. I had 2 children with no medication in my 20's and then got UC so I've paid my dues!!!
