Hi guys,

I'm not pregnant and i still have the ileostomy which is due to be reversed this coming January.

I had baby number 1 before my ileostomy and baby number 2 after the ileostomy, but at the risk of sounding greedy and ungrateful, we always wanted 3 to complete our little family. Anyway, i was diagnosed with UC at 19 and i'm now 28, my nurse and surgeon said they don't want to put off the pouch surgery any longer as they start getting anxious about cancer around the 10 year mark... that being said my nurse kind of advised against any more kids after the j pouch, she said due to my abdominal hernias and all the scar tissue it wouldn't be a good idea for me to get pregnant. Another issue is my sphincter :/ i had some tests done to measure the strength and it all came back as normal, but when looking at the numbers the scale was from about 40-160 and i came in at around 65, so really not very good at all Frowner

That's all the background, i just really wanted to ask for any opinions, and if anyone has been the same sort of situation, especially the hernias and poor sphincter issue, have you decided to go for or against getting pregnant, and was either a good decision? Any help or advice would be so so great.

Thank you for listening,
Sally xxx

Hi Sally,

I can't speak to the hernias/scar tissue issue unfortunately. In regards to your second question, I did get pouchitis while I was pregnant, but it was treatable. I'm not sure if it was caused by pregnancy or not, but I can tell you that most of my problems resolved as soon as I had the baby. On the negative side, I think pregnancy made the pouchitis a lot less pleasant because of the pressure on my bowels from my uterus - it made it a lot harder to control little leaks. That might be something to consider with weak sphincter muscles.

And on another note, I wouldn't call wanting another child greedy or selfish - I'd call that love Smiler

Hi lholdem,

awwwwww thanks for the comment, it is definently love, i cant get enough of the little things! lol

Thanks for your reply also, its good to know the pouchitis was treatable, i think the nurse is very concerned with the sphinters and hernias, all the pressure on it all...did the leaks stop once you'd had baby or did it cause a more permenant problem?

Thanks again,

The leaking was definitely exacerbated by being pregnant. I am dealing with it a bit again as I have another bout of pouchitis, but nothing like when I was pregnant. It was like my pouch had no room to fill up so whenever I had gas or something coming in, it was really hard to keep a little leak from coming out :/ In general I felt way better right after delivering - even with the incision from the c-section. So good news, pregnancy didn't seem to "cause" issues; bad news, pregnancy made those issues less comfortable/manageable.
