Hi, I haven't been on here in a while because I have been doing great until today. I have been passing a TON of blood today (dark red) I haven't eaten anything abnormal and I am not in a lot of pain but i have passed a lot of blood to the point i am concerned. The only thing I can think of is I did take three aleve over 48 hours for a headache and I do know that we aren't really supposed to take NSAIDS. Could this be the problem? I am new to SF and don't have a gastro yet and i really dont want to spend a lot at the emergency room. Should I give it a few days to see if it stops or make an appointment with a doctor?

Thanks for any insight.

It's hard to know how much blood "a ton" is, so it's hard to guess whether you have an emergency. If you are actively bleeding substantial amounts (e.g. an ulcer into a little artery) then you have an emergency. Seepage can go on for a long time, as many of us have experienced with IBD.

Bleeding from the pouch would often be bright red unless it sat around for a bit. Bleeding from the esophagus or stomach is often black by the time it comes out the other end. So a first guess would be small bowel bleeding, but that's just a guess.

I think it would be unusual to get bleeding from three doses of Aleve, but unusual things happen every day. Other causes may be more likely, though.

In any case, I'd suggest getting a referral to a good GI - you'll need it whether you visit the ED or not.
One dose of Aleve - even 3 of them - doubtful that would be the sole cause of your bleeding. If you have had other inflammation issues in your pouch, then I could see the NSAIDs causing this. Or, if you take Aleve or other NSAIDs consistently - yes, it could cause bleeding.

If it continues for a day or two, I would be making an immediate appt. with my surgeon or GI doc.

Do you have any update?
