I have a fissure/swollen skin tag that I have been suffering with for over a month. Have been using nefedipine for two weeks. Told surgeon I had some hydrocodone left from previous surgeries that I had been taking occasionally for the pain. He said that ibuprophen would help more for the inflammation. So have been taking 2 every six hours for the last two weeks. Had seemed to have helped a little for 3-4 hours at a time, but now seems I may be having onset of pouchitis. After searching through this site I have seen that the NSAID may have actually played a role in the onset of the pouchitis. Quit taking the ibuprophen last night and started taking Cipro in hopes to knock out the pouchitis. The hydrocodone does not seem to be touching the pain. Can not function or sleep in this condition...please help!! What can I ask to be prescribed that will help with this pain. Obviously my surgeon didn't know enough about the NSAID to not tell me to take them. I'm at the end of my rope. Don't know how much longer I can take this.

Ask for topical lidocaine. Most oral meds won't touch this. A muscle relaxer like valium might help with the painful spasms of the sphincter. Sitz baths are your best relief, but there is a limit on how much sitting in a hot bath you can do.

Going to your GI instead of the surgeon might be a good idea too.

I am not sure the ER will be too helpful, other than giving you a one time pain shot.

I feel for you...kind of sounds like when I had two setons placed for my RV fistula - they were horribly painful and I found that the painkillers did nothing, but the NSAIDS really helped the inflammation, though they can be contraindicated for those of us with IBD. I will echo what Jan mentioned earlier about the sitz baths, as hot as you can stand them and as often as you can do them. Those were a great relief and I still use them on occasion when I'm having a flare or a lot of BB. Hope they get the pain under control for you very soon. Frowner
