Hello,

I had a total Proctolectomy removal in 2005 and was taken down August of 2005. I was doing really well for my J-pouch but I got a hematoma from a fall and eventually got a fistula from it in 2012. Since that surgery in 2012, I have had leakage which was my main issue. I recently have been told I have chronic pouchitis, but I recently developed another anal fistula and abscess and had the abscess surgery. My surgeon informed me that I have poor pouch function/dysfunctional pouch. But he nor no one can tell me what that means or the cause and says eventually I'll need a ileostomy permanently. Has anyone been told they also have a dysfunctional pouch? Is there a test to confirm this? I thought of having a temporary ileostomy to let my pouch heal but the surgeon had said this was not possible due to my J-pouch being so low next to my anus and my J-pouch was sewn.
Any advice or help on what to do or any other doctor to try to see would be great.

Thanks

I think your doctor has really made a hasty decision based on what I'm seeing in your post. There are others here who have overcome much more with their j pouches and we're still able to keep them. I would honestly get a second opinion on the matter. Is it Spokane in Washington where you live? I personally am not incredibly familiar with the health care there. I would create a new post and title it "Any good Doctors near Spokane WA?" and see what hits you get.
