Hi,

Not sure if anyone else experiences this. I've had my jpouch for...wow...about 25 years now. Out of those 25 years, there have probably been about four nights when I didn't have to get up in the middle of the night to use the washroom.

I have had some very annoying changes though in the past 6 months to a year. I'll get up to use the washroom and empty it as I can. Then I lie back down, and I feel the gas or things moving in my stomach. So I have to get up again (or I can't fall back asleep). Sometimes, I even have to get up a third time. This is really annoying at 3am as I just want to go back to bed.

Does anyone experience this? Anything I can do (am guessing not as I do seem to go as much as I can on time #1).

Welcome to my life also. I have had my jpouch for over 7 years and rarely sleep through the night. On bad nights, I can be up, sitting at the computer for a while, and have no urge to go. Then when I get the confidence to go back to bed, I often get the urge to go within a minute of laying in bed. I share your frustration but am not sure the solution. Even eating dinner earlier does not work.
Sorry, I should clarify. I have always gotten up at night. It's just that I get up, go to bed, and my bowels aren't settled and so have to get up again. Sometimes I try to ignore it, but it keeps me up so have no choice but to get up again.

Pluot, no...I rarely see my GI...only if big issues such as pouchitis or recent stomach issues. You say there are many causes. Such as?
One possibility could be a stricture that is preventing you from emptying completely. Another is that the pouch could be overstretched over the years, which would also make it difficult to empty completely. Or, it could be prolapsing -- again, hard to empty completely. Could be cuffitis causing swelling that prevents you from emptying completely. Could be pouchitis. Could be irritable pouch syndrome (IPS). Could be one of a million other things Smiler

Aside from diet mods and basic stuff like that, I think you need input from a GI to diagnose any of the above.

I will say that there is no pain associated with it (so not likely pouchitis), and this only happens at night. (Although in a scope a year ago for nausea...he diagnosed me with gastritis but did say there was a bit of inflammation.
never have slept through the night average is 3 times but i go to bed late so if you start from earlier going to bed time could be more..

i just do it but i am also retired and so things often seem better in morning so i generally get up later..i need a lot of sleep so earliest i get up 9:30..sometimes later to make up interrupted sleep..

if you have not tried it how about imodium starting in early evening you can take up to 8 i believe ..so maybe 3 or so to start..jan says as you build up from day to day there is staying power of drug builds up..

i have had to go in the night and soon as i am back in bed have to go again too but not always..not sure why or how come..i am fortunate that i get up go and can go back to sleep i suppose..i just accept interrupted sleep..
