Hi, my son had his j pouch surgery 11 yrs ago. Since November he has been having stomach pains. After a 3 day stay in the hospital, numerous xrays and clear liquic diet they have decided it has to be adhesions. He is going to have an upper GI series on Tuesday and then meeting with the surgeon on Thursday. Can anybody please enlighten me about adhesions and the recovery period, etc.. I am hoping this will resolve his problem as he has lost 15 lbs since November.
Thanking you in advance,
Mary

Mary:

Adhesions are basically scar tissue. However, rather than just in the place of injury, the scar tissue forms between two organs or an organ and the muscle (i.e. abdominal) wall. So, for instance, parts of the intestine can be "bound" together or pinched in, causing blockages; they can be quite painful.

I've had two adhesion removal surgeries, and the recovery time for both was about 6 weeks, with all the typical abdominal surgery warnings and precautions. Not too much of a big deal -- but remember everyone is different! -- and the relief was immediate.

No worries! If/when they operate to cut the adhesions, be sure to ask them about the anti-adhesion liquid which is sometimes used after these surgeries. Basically it is just kind of sprayed around and helps prevent further adhesion development. I can't remember what it is called, but they should know what you're talking about.

I had adhesion surgery laproscopically. After 2 weeks I was doing pretty good. I did not gave sera film. My surgeon does not believe in it. I still get sometimes small blockages that resolve quickly on occasion and in 4 years only 1 that required a trip to the ER. Prior to this I would be in the ER every few weeks. It also got to a point I could not eat. Good luck! with all we have been thru this was not too bad.
