I'll be celebrating 10 years with my J-pouch next Christmas, and my scar tissue has always bothered me. I don't mind having a scar; I'm quite proud of it and it tells part of the story of who I am, but in recovery it stretched quite a lot and so in places the scar tissue is over 1 centimetre across. The scar itself is 15cm long, and there's also a round scar from where I had a temporary stoma. I'd prefer it if it was a bit neater.

Does anyone have any experience of having further surgery to improve the appearance of their scar? I suspect it's not something I could get done on the NHS unless it affected my job, or was affecting my psychologically, which it isn't.

Any advice would be very gratefully received!

Congratulations on the 10 yr anniversary.
I finally had enough of my scars 2 yrs ago and found a plastic surgeon to fix them. I had the 15in main-line scar + 3 horizontal stoma scars that were very long an puckered.
I should have had the surgeon mark my scars pre-op to make sure that he would do what he promised.
I had an unexpected surprise when the nurse came to change my dressings and I discovered that he had only done 1/2 of what he said he had done. The middle of the long scar, 1 out of 3 stoma scars.
I was devistated.
Since then I have had him fix them correctly (3 more surgeries under local anesthetic) and the result is not bad. Still red after 8 months but it is getting better and I hope that in another year or 2 it will look ok.
I must admit that it is less 'perfect' than I had hoped but much better than it was. All in all I am satisfied but not thrilled.
You must adapt your expectations to the reality of surgery and be patient...you will not really see the final results for about a year so be prepared to be patient.
I hope that you get what you want done.
good luck
