I had a total colectomy and ileostomy on Jan 24, 2014 so I am very new to all of this. I appreciate everyone's comments and posts - they have really helped me so far.

I am wondering about possible blockages and cramping. I have had quite a bit of cramping this afternoon. My ostomy output is thin liquid so I wouldn't think that there is a blockage but I just can't imagine what else it could be. I haven't had any cramping like this until today. The last time I emptied my appliance, I thought I noticed a little bit of blood coming from the stoma. Is this normal? It's hard to tell if it is blood or not because there is also output coming out.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The stoma still looks pink in color but I am worried about the cramping and possible blood that I saw. Some of the cramping has been pretty severe and its making me a bit nervous because I haven't had this feeling until today. I had some canned pears to eat today but that is the only new thing I added to my diet.

Thank you,
Wendy

Hi Wendy!
I'm kind if new to this too, had my 2nd surgery and loop ileo on Jan. 9. Some blood is normal around stoma, but I've never had lots. Whenever I wipe it, there is blood, so I doubt that's a problem unless it increases or seems to be flowing.
Regarding cramping, that can be caused by sugar, like from pears. I have had to cut all sugar due to cramping. I had blockages, but most likely as long as you are continuing to have output probably not blockage. My understanding is that the loop ileostomy is more challenging, harder for output to exit. Any slowdown could cause cramping, too. My end ileo after first surgery worked amazingly well! Ate sugar, lots of spicy foods, and even could drink alcohol. Hoping someone else will chime in here, but I'd recommend a minimal residue diet or even clear liquids for a day or so to see if cramping gets better. And if output stops, cramping continues, call your surgeon. Hope you feel better soon! LJZ
