A little background, on Jan 20th I went to the ER with what I thought was a partial bowel obstruction. I've had several in the 17 years since my J-pouch surgery. The CT scan didn't show anything so they gave me fluids, pain pills, nausea meds and said it was probably a virus. I suffered through the next week, the pain finally going away.
I tried to stay hydrated. I am never without something to drink in my hand, water or Powerade. However on the 29th I knew I was getting too dehydrated. More seemed to be leaving than I was taking in, in spite of my meds to slow things down. I've been hospitalized for dehydration 7 times in the last 2 1/2 yrs and know when things are getting serious. Back to the hospital for 5 days.
Two days after I am discharged my belly is cramping like crazy. I was still passing stool but my stomach was bloated and tender. After about 12 hours I started throwing up, back to the hospital! This time, to my relief, the CT scan showed the partial obstruction. Six days later, home again.
My issue now is chronic nausea. I've tried everything. Zofran, prescription Prilosec, Pepto, Tums, pickle juice, ginger, eating, not eating (which I really can't afford to do since I'm having trouble keeping my weight up), eating bland foods, taking/not taking my normal meds.
I am out of ideas on what to do or what to ask my Dr for to make the nausea better. I also seem to have a lot of indigestion regardless of what I do/don't do. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!

Are you on a low/ no residue diet? As time goes on, I am having more problems with adhesions and inflammation, causing food to not want to move thru properly. When things back up slightly ahead of the pouch, then I get nausea like you. Sticking to a extremely low fiber diet (almost no veggies and fruit) has helped tremendously since things keep moving along, plus taking flagyl when inflammation gets worse, has helped me also. Hope you get feeling better.

Thanks Mark! Yes, Dr wants me to stick to soups, mashed potatoes, broth, etc. trying to add calories with a couple of Boost per day. I don't want to do TPN but I can't let my weight keep falling. The nausea of course affects my appetite!

I'm so afraid of it happening again as it will probably mean surgery, at least to see what's going on in there. I am still convinced I had one on Jan 20th even though the CT scan didn't show one.

Hmmm.... Not fun.

Maybe try some morning sickness tips? The pressure wristbands help many people. I found that eating a couple bites of something REALLY salty about 30 minutes before I was going to truly eat settled my stomach enough to eat a mini-meal.

There are also some stronger anti-nauseants available, but they do tend to make you sleep quite a bit. Don't know if that's a possibility for you.

Hope you get some relief soon,

Thanks Gin! Didn't even think of those! Of course I am familiar with car-sick/sea-sick over the counter meds. Maybe if I take a 1/4-1/2 of one the drowsiness wouldn't be so bad. I was supposed to return to work today but the nausea just wouldn't let me. My fear is it's being caused by some remaining obstruction issue.

My feeling on this is that there is probably still some partial blockage or inflammation from the blockage there that is bothering you. After I was released from the hosptial from my first full obstruction, I felt like this still for a couple weeks. Then I was back in the hosptial for a partial obstruction. Again, I was released and had the feeling for another week yet. Then, almost instantly, I felt better and the nausea was totally gone and I was soooo hungry! Either the inflammation that was there finally went away or the remaining kink in the bowel corrected itself. Your bowel get's pretty beat up during an obstruction so it needs some time to calm back down.

I have had frequent partial and full obstructions for years. Just released for a full obstruction 2 weeks ago..was hospitalized for 7 days.
I find it always takes me at least 2 weeks to fully recover following discharge. That is with lots of bed rest and taking it very easy and eating very soft, bland foods.
Obstructions do take a toll on your intestines and abdomen, just using the abdominal muscles to stand up straight for awhile aggravates adhesions and leads to cramping and sometimes another obstruction for me if I don't take the time to heal completely. That has been my experience..wish you well.

Thanks Ciz81 and welcome Jublilee1962!

I have to agree with your posts. I probably am not giving myself enough time to recover. It's not like I haven't been through this before, it's just really inconvenient right now to be off work. I did return to work today and was able to make it all day. The nausea seemed better but perhaps I was so busy I didn't notice it as much.

Jubilee, doesn't your Dr want to find out why you've had so many obstructions? Mine talks like if this continues he will go in and take a look. Sounds like you've suffered an awful lot. Wishes for continued good health!
