I did fail to mention that if you have an unusually long rectal cuff, it would be possible that the suture line would be beyond the reach of a finger.

1-2 cm is the normal length.

Some people wind up with 10-20 cm, basically half their rectum or more, which can lead to some pretty bad proctitis, not to mention a hard to reach suture line. This is not typical.
