Hi Everyone

I am scheduled for a CT scan of the abdomen and I was sent information about the bowel prep. Problem is that if I do what they ask I will get in trouble really quickly with dehydration and electrolites and end up in ER. I have phoned the Specialist office to see if not eating and just having fluids for two days would do but haven't heard back. Anyone here have this problem and how did you solve it?
Thanks so much! My test is this coming Tuesday.

I have had many abdominal CTs and generally just have to fast the day of the test. I think that is their standard prep (no prep).

You need to contact your doctor who ordered the test, AND also the imaging facility. The radiologist needs to know that you do not have a colon. Usually, they just send the standard prep instructions for those with a colon, because they don't know any different. For me, it was not the prep that was often the problem, it was drinking all the contrast, because I didn't have all that gut that needed to fill with it.

I have a CT Scan on the 24th
My instructions are:
Nothing to eat and only clear fluids for 6 hours prior to the scan (it is at 14.20)
Arrive one hour early to drink preparation liquid
and you will probably need an injection (that is my instructions)I haven't been sent anything to clear the bowel
colon gone - pouch is disconnected - they're looking for infection/abscesses

You did inform them that you had no colon, correct? Telling them you have a j-pouch is probably as effective as telling them you have a raincoat! Plus, you need to be sure that they are not just reading the instructions to you (as in: just the receptionist answering the phone). You need to be clear that you want the radiologist (MD) who will be interpreting the results to know you don't have a colon and what is the necessary prep in that situation.

I've gone through this many times and the receptionists are used to people calling and saying they don't want to take the prep. But they need to understand that you are a different case.

Good luck!
