was rotating antibiotics for7 years..first diagonosed with antibiotic dependent pouchitis, then changed diagnosed with bacteria overgrowth..got c-diff about three weeks ago..took vancomycin for that and than gave up any antibiotics cold turkey as per dr. shen suggestion..depending solely on diet of giving up all starchy carbs completely and low sugar(fruit intake and only sugar naturally in veggies as example..)never was able to be off antibiotics ever for any amount of days..i am going on 9 days and i hope still counting no return of my worst symptoms( severe irritation, burning, high frequency going to bathroom, feeling of not emptying, and having to go as soon as i ate anything)

i was already taking probiotics prior and by themselves did not fix issues..i still continue them however..that with diet to starve off bad bacteria..(culturelle,ss.boulardii,align)

will keep updating as to how i am..hoping i found answer to my pouch problems..wothout antibiotics or other drugs..

Yes keep us up dated I have appointment late January with my doctor he want me on low does flagyl long term as I have high frequency, have had pouchitus in the past and was on antibiotic for three months,I don't have pouchitus now only going up to 20 times a day, will be talking about ips when I go,so would be interested in how you go with diet.

I see Shen as well. I follow a paleo diet and hardly ever eat fruit. I rarely need antibiotics thanks to him and diet change. I took tindamax and that was the winner. I can't use cipro since I got c,diff.

Probiotics make me 1000 times worse. I can't take any of that stuff. Might be making you have issues if you have SIBO. It makes me gassy and in pain with foamy output.

susan..i know pretty certainly if you have bacteria overgrowth for any reason from everything i read and been told all starchy carbs feed bad bacteria and they are finally acknowledging that in western meds..so i do not know if i found my answer yet as the whole jpouch thing is very complex starting with fact we are using our small intestine to function like the large intestine and the large intestine usually has much more bacterias and functions that way..

with that said i will tell you what i eat..i include greek no fat yoghurt(face) in my diet and allow myself hard cheeses such as swiss, chedar(they are aged and have almost no lactose(sugar issues for us)i eat raw nuts like almonds and walnuts,i eat fish, chicken and turkey,i eat veggies of all types(except starchy ones white or brown)i eat eggs(lots of eggs)i mix whole eggs with just whites(they come ready to pour in cartins)i eat fruit..the best of which is berries all types, bananas but only after they develop little brown spots(again for less harmful sugar)i even have a receipe for almond bread(almond flour) if one cares to make it..(very easy and i do not cook!!!)and you can make pancakes from the almond flour as well....i use it to bread chicken or anything else..

i mix those things up to make my day of eating.. like i start day with cup of yoghurt with blueberries and walnuts and or almonds with wsome cinammine..

lunch might be an big egg omlette with some cut up chicken and some veggies..

dinner might be salmon with some peso sauce and maybe brocoli and carrots steamed..if i need my sweet i have some fruit..

in between those meals (after lunch and after dinner) might have small bag of almonds and a piece of fruit,or a piece of chedar and piece of apple, open a can of tuna add lemon, a salad..

even if this is not my whole answer to my problem(still hoping it is) i know its the way to go because bad bacteria is probably part or all my issue..it probably is wise to keep fruit portions down and i am working on that..

I was diagnosed with SIBO and eliminated carbs and sugars on the suggestion of my doctor (a Shen disciple) and it has made a huge difference. I also consulted a registered dietician. I am on significantly lower dosages of antibiotics than ever before and I only take them every other week. My diet is sort of modified Paleo- unlike Vanessavy I am eating fruits but no added sugar is put in anything I eat. I have eggs and natural turkey sausage (minimally processed) for breakfast, apples, fresh ground nut butters and whole edamame for lunch, and chicken or turkey or fish and 2 vegetables for dinner, usually a small shredded raw brussel sprouts salad and butternut squash. I completely avoid all bread products, all cereals, processed foods, potatoes and rice. When I go out to eat I order entree salads, usually with either chicken, shrimp or salmon and no bread. I have greatly restricted my intake of dairy products and I consume probiotic capsules and beverages rather than yogurt, which I gave up.

There are a few members in my CCFA support group on various similar diets, the basic principles being reductions in carbs and sugars and gluten.

vannessavy i am not sure the probiotics do anything for sibo for various reasons..there are thousands of bacteria in gut and the probiotics each pick certain ones they think populate the gut more..no one knows which are needed actually for sibo and if it applies to everyone..i actually was amd am not taking them for sobo i started them after my first bout of c-diff having read that certain ones might be good to prevent getting it..that was the culturelle and the ss boulardii..i know they are not the cause of my issues as i had the issues literally from just after operation and never started probiotics until years later..however,i knew they did not make me worse at least ones i take..but years ago when i had colitus i tried vsl#3 and boy that definitely made me much worse so i hear you as to your problwms with it..

if anything is going to work for us i think the diet has hope and i am excited to think i can forgo rotating antibiotics everyday of my life by diet alone..keeping my fingers crossed and thinking if so we might be able on this site to pass it along to sibo sufferersat least..

Rebecca, CCFA=Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. The local branches usually have support groups. I am aware of 2 CCFA support groups currently operating in Connecticut. There is probably one in your area as well. The members in my group are extremely diet conscious and they are eating similar types of diets, even though they do not have SIBO (they are mostly Crohn's and Colitis patients).

ct barrister tried to send this to you but repeating as it may help others on site..

yes i know now about group you are referring to(ccfa) and my guess is those people with chrohns and colitus are following..breaking the vicious cycle ..intestinal health through diet ..by elaine gottshall..used successfully by many people with chrohns, colitus and other intestinal issues..celiac,diverticulis etc....it actually has worked for many of them to stop the disease..it is strict and eliminates starchy carbs and sugar(sucrose) except fruit with knowledge that those foods feed bad bacteria..(only now being looked at by western med. to help sibo,ibs..)

with sibo ironically this may be the answer to some of our issues..infact i knew of it and used it when i had colitus years ago..unfortunately i was not one where a diet would help my form of colitus..but here i am going full circle back to it for sibo!!! crazy..but i think i have better chance of it helping!!!

two weeks down and holding on my diet and my probiotics just in case they may aid the diet..no antibiotics!!!!this is a record for me...never could go two days without them before in 7 years of having jpouch...

again absolutely no starchy carbs of any kind(grains (flour),potatoes, rice, pasta bread, sugar less exact..some sugar eaten in yoghurt, natural to fruits and veggies and i eat fruits(no limit at this time)doing well with this but might experiment with limiting fruit a bit..however fruit has type sugar frutose i believe and it digests differently than other sugars..i eat some dairy but only hard cheeses like chedar ,swizz for example..this is right out of the book scd diet..breaking vicious cycle..elaine gottscell i mentioned before..will follow up in a month..

Rebe. I must say I am doing the no carbs as you posted the last two weeks, and can't believe the difference was going up to 20 times a day this has greatly improved, was put on a gluten free eating plan by dietician made no difference but no carbs and low sugar has made life more bearable went for a picnic with extended family and only need a loo once so thank you and keep us updated on your progress as it is encouraging
